Not talking specific politicians, but overall, are politicians some one that should be seen as appropriate role models? Are politicians some one that parents should say about "work hard and you can be like then"?

Poll incoming, please be patient of my slow typing.

Edit: poll done.

There is no option for "some are while some aren't".

Politicians are just a group, like actors, baseball players, parents, etc. It depends on the person, not what group he belongs.

George Washington was my role model, growing up.

Charlie Rangel, was not.

I don't think so. I can't think of any politician anywhere that I would point to and call a role model for my kid.

I tend to be more admiring of doctors, humanitarian workers, firemen, architects, artists, writers, self-made business(wo)men... Polticians, nope. Not a one.

They damned well should be. Unfortunately, they are not. And we do not seem to expect better.

Yes, if you want to be a thief, the best people to watch for inspiration are you elected officials.

I don't really buy into the whole concept of "role models", I don't think *ANYONE* is a role model intrinsically. Some people might be better to admire than others, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with their jobs or their public stature and everything to do with the character of the individuals in question.

I agree in some respects and disagree in others. It really depends on the definition of role model being used.

If you use the original meaning, the role the person plays (such as job, public stature, etc) has everything to do with it. The character of the individual may or may not be relevant, it all depends on the role being modeled.

But if you use the modern definition, which has become so generic that the "role" supposedly being played is basically that of a human being, then it has everything to do with the character of the individual in question and jobs or public stature should really have nothing to do with what makes a good role model.

I suppose they can be role models to scum bags and liars.

Should they be role models would be a better question.

Should they be? Yes.
Are they? No.

I think it is not a bad thing to tell a child that it is a laudable aspirational goal to become a politician. I am having a hard time thinking of any living politicians I would want my child to emulate, though.

Mitt Romney.
Possibly, but the other thing I'm worried about is how squeaky clean is he, really? I have no particular suspicions, but I didn't have any for John Edwards, either.

The poll question is different than the OP question. The OP asks "should they be role models" and the poll asks "are they role models". Two different questions. I would say no to the former but I voted yes to the latter. Politicians are role models, especially national leaders.

But this list, including the politicians, are men, subject to greed ,ignorance and fear..
Like it or not, the politicians are role models; as Charlie Manson was for some.
Saddam Huissan seems to be a role model for a great many in Iraq..
Its the children, the children of all ages who will choose a model..
This is not always done wisely..
We do need the citizens to participate in politics a lot more than they do.

For one to reject a politician unless he is "squeaky clean" is akin to accepting only the pipsqueak..:spin:

They should be role models, but thank God they aren't.;)

Mitt Romney.

You mean be vague about everything you say and then do the opposite when it's politically advantageous?

Overall no. Sure there might be a few honest politicians but most of them are hypocrites, crooks, phonies, power hungry and liars. Serving in politics is supposed to be service to the community and to ones country much the same way law enforcement, military, fire fighting, teaching to a certain extent and charity work is. But political offices seem nothing more more for a means for someone to achieve power and money instead of serving their community and country.

only once they do something immoral. ;-)

They are role models in as much as they should practice what they preach.

Are politicians role models? No way.

Should they be role models? Absolutely not. They should be politicians, decision makers, legislators, communicators and educators about the role of the political process in the life of the society.

Those in need of a role model are sadly under-using their own conscience and values. Be your own role model.
