Should we establish a scientific base on the moon?

It would be a base where humans live and study astronomy long-term. Obviously, it would be expensive, but we would gain a lot of knowledge about the universe that we can't get here on earth.

Less expensive than current military spending. I am sure 250 billion could be saved from the military and spent on reducing debts(to lower interest rate payments) and putting a scientific base on the moon. The continuation of the base could be financed by the money you save on reducing interest payments on the debt.

No. Its an unnecessary and expensive expense.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Yes.

    My reasons are:

    I want us too.

    Perfectly reasonable, no?

The money spend on the Iraq war could have created a huge scientific base on the moon, and mars, and created several space stations, and created many new space telescopes, a new shuttle program and other things..

So, what is actually wasted money?

Put things in perspective, thats what the peope of the US have great problems with these days... I would say also Europeans, but to a slightly lesser degree.

For some reason I think you are just spewing anti-American and anti-war trash rhetoric, plus I do not think you are accounting for long term costs of maintaining such bases and facilities.

Yeah, we could essentially take the cost curve of the ISS, and multiply it by 100...

If we could somehow find a way to decrease the cost of a moon base to more reasonable costs, we should. But we definitely should not bankrupt the world trying to get some scientific knowledge. It just wouldn't be worth it at that cost...

No. Right now, we need to be spending money on figuring out a cheap way to get payloads into orbit. Once we can cheaply put stuff in space, then we can figure out a cheap way to send robots to the moon. Then we can discuss putting people there.

I agree, our science programs on earth are more important. Even more important is psychology.
    Why do people take drugs?
    Why are crimes committed?
    Why do "normal men" hate?
I think the earth scientists just want to escape from all this.....hard to fault...
