I consider pot use the same as tobacco use or excessive alcohol use: stupid. If you need to smoke, snort, imbibe or inject some substance to feel good about yourself, you've got some serious problems.

How very judgemental. I bet you abuse your body in some way!

Nope. Don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs, never have, never will. Never needed or wanted any of it.

Try again.

Remember son, people exclusively smoke pot to feel better about themselves because they are weak people and only weak people.

What, did i hear weak?

If you think pot heads are weak than let me give a list of successful pot heads.

Obama smoked weed, Bush smoked weed, Bill Clinton smoked weed, and Micheal Phelps also smoked weed.
Now do you call that weak or smart successful pot heads?

Those are not "potheads". There is a difference between someone who smokes rarely, or once in a while, and someone who smokes every day for quite some time. None of those folks did the latter.

So your position on this has no merit.

I gave one exception to this rule, myself. I was definitely a pothead who accomplished much. Is that not enough?

I bet one of them were potheads back in the days and if they got caught doing marijuana, they wouldn't be here.

No, it's not. Firstly it's anecdotal. Secondly, the exception doesn't prove the rule... unless you can prove that it's not an exception.

"Betting" is not evidence. So, you still have nothing.

Still, I have personally known at least 2 other people whom I could describe as 'needing' pot to be successful. (Not me, it just makes me stupid and doesn't give the euphoria. Boring, really) I am certain they were also self-medicating something. One of them is a Nurse (recently), now. The other I don't know anymore, but was a straight A student. Luckily, they both found pot to be helpful. There will be time later for them to find the better method for whatever ails them.

Of course these are anecdotal as well. And, if true, are still examples of exceptions to the rule.

I beg to differ. Smoking pot helped me tremendously in college where I pursued a degree in Physics. Smoking pot helped me visualize a lot of Physics like thermo, modern, quantum, nuclear, mechanics, ... Back then I was smoking 2-3 times a day and would always to my physics studying high. I used to head home after class and get high then go back to the lab at 11 pm and study til 3 am. I even got high before taking exams and those were no easy exams. You know you are in big ****ing trouble when the exam is a take home, open book, open notes, internet allowed, 8 hour exam! It was killer! I had a 3.3 GPA.

It also helped me in English, Chemistry and Mathematics.

I submit that you are the exception rather than the rule. No one need educate me on the merits/demerits of cannibis as I have been a long time student of the substance myself.

Speaking for myself, there is a time and place for getting buzzed. Granted, it might open your awareness in a classroom where hightened awareness is necessary for the individual to keep up. But, across the board, I think it's safe to say that pot is no friend to study and comprehension and retainment of said studies.

For example, I just love catching a buzz and learning Pink Floyd tunes. But ask me a week later what I played and you'll most likely get a "duh..." :3oops:

Often people miss the best things in life out of fear. .----but fine by me.

Myself, I probably miss out on bunji (sp?) jumping or sky-diving or motor cycle riding. But, the good news is, I am not interested in them whatsoever.

Are you insinuating our collegue doesn't partake in intoxicants out of fear? If he doesn't need them, desire them, isn't curious about them, and is having a good life without them, I say more power to him/her.

I think the smartest route is to avoid them altogether. Some folks can and some folks can't.

Can't miss something you never had I suppose.

I really love how one person accuses me of doing something to screw up my body and when I prove them wrong, someone else pops up and says it's just because I'm afraid to do it.

No, I'm just not stupid.

You bring it on yourself by calling a lot of DPers "stupid."

Carl Sagan smoked pot regularly and attributed much of his great scientific achievements to ideas he concocted while stoned.

Marijuana affects everyone differently. I smoke it occasionally because its effects on me closely match those described by Sagan. I think the problem with marijuana is that, like many illicit drugs, it attracts those who are unable to cope with sobriety. Those that easily cope with sobriety are less likely to use drugs and are, generally speaking, more successful.

It's the whole correlation does not equal causation thing. Stoners and potheads have a reputation for being pretty stupid, but is weed the underlying cause? Or did they simply not learn tap the potential of their minds, instead relying on a drug? Certainly weed has the potential to exarcerbate stupidity and ignorance; if you become hyperfocused while high and focus that energy intently on Seinfield reruns, you won't expand your mind.

However, when I become hyperfocused while high, I do hours of research. I attribute my deeper understanding of mathematics and physics to insight gained while high, a perspective I may not otherwise have achieved.

I think weed, like alcohol, can destroy the full capabilities of your mind. But, depending on how its used, I believe it can inspire new ways of thinking which may stimulate otherwise unused neurons. Until we allow actual research into its true nature, we'll have to discover its risks and benefits on a personal level.

Good post. QFT.

You bring it on yourself by calling a lot of DPers "stupid."

Then a lot of DPers can avoid that by not being stupid. Easy how that works.

You are making assumptions and guesses. Let me ask a simple question: how do we know that Carl Sagan's weed usage actually helped him, this is was the underlying cause, and not actually a hindrance and he would have been able to do more if he had not used? In point of fact, we do not, and as such, have to fall back on research.

Anecdotal evidence is not valid, because it lacks a control. We do not know how some one who gets high would have done if they did not do so.

How very mature of you. I guess anyone who doesn't live life in the exact same manner that you choose to is stupid. God forbid we don't act like you expect us to...

People who smoke Marijuana lack ambition, motivation, work ethic, and have issues with codependency.

I know two brothers who are the quintessential stoners. They are in there forties and live at home with there mother. They work menial jobs just to make enough money to by weed, beer and pizza.

I would have agreed with this post 100% if it only started out with the word, "Some."

Now, I know it first hand to be a falsehood, or in the least, painting with a very broad paint brush. I know the people you speak of Sgt. I know some of your words to be very true. But I come from the old school of thought that dictates, "If you want to be a doctor, hang with doctors. If you want to be a lawyer, hang with lawyers. If you want to be a junkie, hang with junkies."

Society has often made the people who smoke pot go stand in the corner with the wino's and junkies. There is not much seperation, in some people's minds, between a pot smoker and a junky.

On the other hand, some people know this to be proposterous idea and do not think that one cannot be sucessful and smoke a doobie at the same time.

I surround myself with good people. Doctors, lawyers, policemen, plumbers, mechanics, musicians and all occupational points in-between. My friends come from all walks of life. They are fine neighbors, parents, citizens and highly motivated people. But quite a few of them do like to go sneak out behind the barn and burn a bowl now and again.

They are nothing like the Cheech and Chong you speak of.

You are right, I should have started with the word some. I sometimes have this problem with generalization. I wonder if its a result of all of the pot I smoked back in the day.
