Re: Do you trust the Government?

The government is comprised of career politicians who couldn't care less about the individuals that make up this great country unless it happens to impact their chances for re-election. The government has given me little reason to trust them in anything. There is an inverse relationship between my age and the amount of trust I have in our government.

Many in government forget too easily that they are there to serve mankind. To remind them of this, 100% of the people must vote..
Now we have less than half of that.
This is not a good reflection on the people.
Government's "intended role".. that would be quite the debate.

    I agree wholeheartedly.

It's like my son telling me that he's going to handle his school work and bring his grades up, then I find out later that he hasn't been handling anything except for his social calendar.

My response to him and to my government:

"I've seen how you handle things, now I'M going to handle things my way."

Vote out those representatives who are failing to do their job of REAL representation and I will take responsibility for my own future (social security as one small example).

Besides some small key note issues that seperate the Republicans and Democrats, I really do not see much of a difference in the overall platform of either. They like to say how they are traditionalists or progressives... but these are just buzzwords used to divide and distract.

I don't believe in NO government and I certainly don't believe in anarchy - but I do believe in holding those responsible for the mess that we are in. I am not surprised with these poll results... I hear it every day and in about just any news source there is extreme discontent with the American people.

While the failing economy has a lot to do with it, I really don't think that is the main issue. I do believe that we have been building to this level of national discontent for some time now....

Re: Do you trust the Government?

I trust that certain sectors of the government are trying the best they can to do the best they can.

I do acknowledge that private interests pull a great many of the strings of government and my trust level would go up exponentially were we to remove those private influences.

I acknowledge a lot more of what the government does RIGHT than most other people; we have a postal system that can get almost anything you want to anywhere you want in a relatively short space of time. We have a system of infrastructure that maintains the roads we use on a daily basis and the fact that we HAVE those roads and that they go so many places is significant. We have a slew of regulations protecting us from bad water, bad food, bad air. We have police that (usually) do their best to protect the citizenry.

Our government is by no means perfect and I take very serious issue with a laundry list of things, but I dont think that means I have to ignore the very positive things that get accomplished.

Statesmen are rare, and politicians suck. That being said, I subscribe to the founders notion that government is a necessary evil which must be of as minimal of scope as possible. I love our country, I hate what our government has become over the years, it's a bloated, fat, glutton in need of a diet. Republicans and Democrats are all responsible for the situation, they'll both grow the scope of government for their own niche issues.

A Gubment that takes care of gubment business, is one thing. But one that has it's nose in every bodies business, I can do with out. They always have their hand out, and are ready to apply penalty and interest every time they get a chance. They think they are better than the average working Man. I fee they are not as good.

How can you call people sheep when you are disillusioned with your own perception of the government?

I don't trust the government and it has nothing to do with conspiracies, I have dealt with enough of the state and federal government to know that they are a bunch of crooks. Most of them deserve being behind bars.

Could this be a turning point in American politics, especially given the high levels of dissatisfaction regarding both major political parties? Could this be a possible door opening for third parties?

Do you agree with these poll results (do you trust the government) and does this affect your own views on the two party system as we know it?

    Thoughts?
The poll question "Do I trust the government" is too vague. Trust them to do what? Trust them to look after my best interests? Not their job, they have to look out for the best interest of the country. Do I trust them to look out for the best interest of the country? Debatable, but I do believe they believe they are doing this for the most part. Trust them to be honest? Probably not really.

As far as third parties, no, definitely not. Just not going to happen now or any time in the near future. The most mainstream actual third party, the Libertarians, are still sen as nuts and still has a membership less than 1 % of either of the major parties. A Tea Party could challenge for a bit, but they do not have currently a party or platform, and interest in them will wane as soon as the economy improves.

Re: Do you trust the Government?

I can't believe I agree with bhkad. I feel dirty.

    -------------

With that said, there is no chance of a third party being elected within the next 50-60 years. What makes the Tea Party think it has one?

It is a coalition of people who ignore history at every turn and pretend that the U.S. only started engaging in interventionism in the last 100 years, or ignore the fact that even with social programs the U.S. has never been as socially and politically prosperous as it is today.

It has people who enjoy all the benefits of social programs and yet complain about them.

It has people who only started caring about illegal immigration when they had Paco doing their roof instead of Steve.

The problem with all this is that these people do not have a platform or any kind of connecting ideology that the public can relate to.

When you point that out to them they say you're an idiot or don't know the constitution and then go about on rants ignoring the actual history of our country so that they can quote the constitution like Evangelicals quoting Bibles. When people do not know the actual history of their country they tend to just quote **** out of history books instead of seeing it contextually.
