'Nuanced perspective'? I would say 'some' people have 'nuanced perspectives' Id say alot of people march to the beat of the same 'drum' so to speak.

    'nnNyes'

you can easily see those who march to the same drum, both sides, right here on DP. i do think this site is fairly conservative.

I'd say most people have a nuanced perspective. But I'd add that a significant portion of the population is averse to self-reflection and thus they don't realize the true degree of the nuances within their own views until they are confronted with them, and even then, they try to disregard the conflict because, in many cases, they don't like what they might find out about themselves.

I march to the beat of a drummer who suffers from seizures and doesn't really understand the concept of rhythm.

I think so too. It makes a lot of assumptions about people even before they start posting. For example, 'Lean'. It provides only one definition of what one might be if a 'leftist' i.e. 'liberal' and the degree of liberal you might be. It's as if concepts such as Green socialist, social democrat, socialist and communist don't exist.

But the very concept of this 'lean' assumes the linear left-right divide that many posters are finding limiting and inadequate.

I really enjoy debating with people of all different affiliations and perspectives, especially those who really engage with an issue and don't write others off because they can be labelled and dismissed using a simplistic title.

The slogan the site uses: "Political bias optional, civility a must" is rarely accurate. "Political bias inevitable, civility only to those you agree with" would be much more accurate.

i see it that was as well. i'm pretty liberal, not ashamed of it, but every post i make doesn't bash republicans, as do some of our more partisan member's posts.

Quite. The tone is very combative, very oppositional. Sometimes it's very hard to keep a calm head and not allow yourself to be goaded into speaking in a way you wouldn't if you kept your cool. The atmosphere of the forum also often encourages you to propose positions more extreme that you really hold in order to make a stronger point in response to another aggressive and extreme post in the opposite direction.

I have to say I don't always manage to avoid the pitfalls, but one tries, eh?
