Can't get any? Or sick and tired of your boring and ugly partner? What if you could pay money to experience sex in virtual reality. You could do it with the partner of your dreams, maybe even the likeness of a famous rock or movie star. Is it ethical to create and use such technology?

It's no more than advanced high-tech porn.

If you don't have an issue with porn, then you shouldn't have an issue with this idea.

Of course. Why wouldn't it be?

I learned about this type of poll in one of my classes. The majority of people will say yes, even tho some saying yes will think that it isnt ethical. Its the way the question is phrased. People are more likely to "acquiesce" anyway, its a proven fact. Even if people in here are anti-sex machine, it will be like 80% in favor.

Creating a new technology, like realistic virtual reality, is typically an ethically-neutral proposition IMO. It's the use to which it is put that has ethical properties.

Would it be ethical for a single person to use? Perhaps... I expect many religious leaders would have problems with it, but if no one is harmed or exploited then I don't know that it would be a huge issue for most.

A married person, that would be a more complex question. Is it adultery? No other live person is involved, but many spouses wouldn't take it well. If it were used instead of having sex with one's spouse, one could certainly argue an alienation of affections.

Don't we already have those? I believe they're called "hands".

That's a thoughtful evaluation of the topic. What about the case of creating a likeness of a real person, a movie star, for example. You could have virtual sex with Megan Fox or Brad Pitt without that person actually being involved in any way. However, would the use of the person's likeness for your own pleasure be a violation of Miss Fox or Mr. Pitt?

I expect Fox and Pitt would insist on getting paid royalties, and that as long as the checks came on time they probably would not care.

That's an interesting take on it. Maybe it's a copyright issue. Perhaps you own the copyright to your own image and if it's used for another person's pleasure, you are entitled to monetary compensation in which case you're a kind of virtual prostitute.

Would it then be possible for someone to be arrested for virtual prostitution?

I would disagree with that. I think all sex between consenting adults, virtual or not, should be legal. Prostitution should be legal as long as all parties consent and no one is a child.

I don't necessarily disagree...

But there are currently laws in place making prostitution illegal, so would it not seem likely that some areas might try to apply them to this hypothetical case?

Wouldn't using a Robot sex slave, ( I do like the sound of that) be the same thing as Masturbation, as far as the Law is concerned? there would still only be one Person involved. No body has filed any laws suits against "Flesh Lights"

No moreso than the fake nude pictures that already exist for pretty much every celebrity.

I agree with your interpretation. A virtual reality sex device would be a sophisticated masturbation device IMO. However, I wouldn't be too surprised to learn someone tried to interpret it differently legally, especially if the likeness of a celeb or another person were involved.

People could also hook them up to Internet-based games. It would then be possible to have virtual sex with a person hundreds or thousands of miles away and have it be a lot like real sex, except that the person on the other end could actually be a pot-bellied toothless orangutan, but look and feel exactly like Brad Pitt or Megan Fox.

You could go on a business trip to Vancouver and then hook up to the net to cyber f--k your hubby or wife back home, only to have someone else log on so that you end up cyber banging another person without even knowing it.

And you get an angry holo mail from your wife to the effect that your fat gay neighbor was chatting with her about the size of your dick.

I saw an old 80's movie called brainstorm with christopher walken and natalie woods and they had a virtual reality gadget and some old guy hooked up on it and had virtual reality sex and had a heart attack and died.

the creator will make bill gates money
then he can afford to buy any ethics he may have lost

But...but...how can you buy ethics? The illusion of ethics, perhaps, but not actual ethics.

As an adult attraction I see nothing wrong with it. The far right will find it objectionable; however, there is nothing ethically wrong with it.

This topic reminds me of a movie called "Demolition Man" because there was such a device in it.
