Is it ethical to create sexual virtual reality machines?

Can't get any? Or sick and tired of your boring and ugly partner? What if you could pay money to experience sex in virtual reality. You could do it with the partner of your dreams, maybe even the likeness of a famous rock or movie star. Is it ethical to create and use such technology?

It's no more than advanced high-tech porn.

If you don't have an issue with porn, then you shouldn't have an issue with this idea.

I learned about this type of poll in one of my classes. The majority of people will say yes, even tho some saying yes will think that it isnt ethical. Its the way the question is phrased. People are more likely to "acquiesce" anyway, its a proven fact. Even if people in here are anti-sex machine, it will be like 80% in favor.

Creating a new technology, like realistic virtual reality, is typically an ethically-neutral proposition IMO. It's the use to which it is put that has ethical properties.

Would it be ethical for a single person to use? Perhaps... I expect many religious leaders would have problems with it, but if no one is harmed or exploited then I don't know that it would be a huge issue for most.

A married person, that would be a more complex question. Is it adultery? No other live person is involved, but many spouses wouldn't take it well. If it were used instead of having sex with one's spouse, one could certainly argue an alienation of affections.

    Ethical? Sure. Admirable? Not really.

That's a thoughtful evaluation of the topic. What about the case of creating a likeness of a real person, a movie star, for example. You could have virtual sex with Megan Fox or Brad Pitt without that person actually being involved in any way. However, would the use of the person's likeness for your own pleasure be a violation of Miss Fox or Mr. Pitt?
