Well, to be perverse I'm going to name Neville Chamberlain, the Enabler.

Edit: Darn, I hit the "ENTER" button before adding "Francisco Franco, Spain", and "Other".

Any mod want to fix that?

Thanks.

Franco chilled out at the end of his life. I traveled in spain when he was in power and I never got hassled by his police. In fact there was more freedom there than in the us at that time.

I voted for stalin.

I'll admit that my knowledge of Franco is minimal. Then again, I wouldn't vote for him, and let's face it, there's a herd of European leaders not listed. Ceasescu, for example.

I picked Chamberlain for one reason....his failures, combined with France's inactions, are the only reason Hitler was able to grow as large as he did. There were several points in the 1030's where Chamberlain's failure to simply do the right thing gave Hitler a success that fueled his image of invincibility.

Hitler should never have been allowed to re-militarize the Rhineland. England's failure to support France, who refused to act anyway, and move troops into the Rhineland in opposition to Hitler's garrison, would have ended Hitler's political career.

Believe it or not but the US had lots of hitler suppoorters during the rise and fall of the third reich. Charles Lindberg comes to mind.

Though would things have been better if we had gone to war earlier? for one thing we would have lost because we wouldn't have got the chance to rearm that Chamberlain gave us

Irrelevant.

The US has lots of Obama supporters, too.

Fools abound.

Always.

Comparing Obama to Hitler is an insult to the American way of life and only shows your ignorance and bigotry. Bin Laden loves people like you.

1) Who's "we"? I"m an American, not English.

2) Yes, things would have been IMMENSELY better if France, with England's support, had used it's 100 divisions to repel the 3 divisions Germany sent into the Rhineland. As I said, it would have led to Hitler's political demise....and in Germany in the 1930's that would have meant Hitler's death.

Chamberlain made sure that England HAD to re-arm because he failed to stop the problem earlier and cheaper. His dithering was just as effective in treating the problem as the woman who waits six years to see the doctor after she found a lump in her breast.

See a problem? Fix it now. They never fix themselves.

Chamberlain for sure. If Britain had shown some backbone to Germany - I am convinced the Holocaust would have either never happened or it would have been a much smaller number of dead people.

While I agree fully, I will admit to voting Chamberlain to provoke discussion, and clearly Stalin was the most evil sonofabitch to walk Europe in the Twentieth Century.

1 "We" is "Us" not you
2 Again this is based on the assumption that we had the capacity to "fix it" we didn't until we rearmed. Had we started fighting earlier we would have lost.

Mussolini has to be it. He led his country into multiple loosing wars. He led his country into utter ruin, he was hanged but at least the trains ran on time. i think that sums up his qualifications.

Didn't more people die as a result of Stalin's policies then the amount of people that died in the Holocaust, and WWII? Given that many of the people who died in WWII were because of Stalin's policies...

Mussolini. His level of incompetence was unmatched among other European leaders at the time. Sure Chamberlain made mistakes, but that is only with the benefit of hindsight. Mussolini was simply a showboating moron who managed to screw up pretty much everything he did.

From a pure leadership perspective (regardless of policy or philosophy) it was Chamberlain.

Neville Chamberlain, because he actually trusted Hitler.

Hitler was actually a good leader and a warped human being, just a crappy general.

You don't know much about El Douche, that's for certain.

"Mussolini was the driving force behind the Italian fascist movement however; its success was limited due to strong traditional networks prevalent in Italy at that time." - Success Of Mussolini

He was not the greatest, but far from the worst.

Yes, Germany's three whole divisions would have shattered France's 100.

Why is it that people completely ignorant of military realities want to pretend they can both understand history and have the only valid vision of the future? And when I say "people", I'm referring to you.

1) Hitler was a corporal, a national leader, never a general.

2) HItler's only serious mistake was Operation Barbarossa. If he'd left Russia alone and focused on silencing England, he probably could have won the war.

If Army Group A (or whatever group it was) hadn't gone north in accordance with the old plans, and if their tanks hadn't been spread out but held in reserve to counter any breakthrough/exploit any holes, then you never know. Jokes about France aside, they would have still put a dent in the German Panzer Corp, even without the extensive level of tactical control.

Anyhow, the Germans won, by smashing and grabbing, before the relatively centralized French Command could react.

I agree, except he made some other mistakes as well. He should never have started telling his generals what to do. Consider, if he hadn't had Goering start bombing British cities, and if he had allowed him to annihilate RAF as he should have done, maybe the invasion of Britain could have procedded.
