Should the government store DNA of law abiding citizens?

If you've done nothing wrong, what do you have to fear?

You seem to completely trust the government, I do not. When you give some people an inch they will try to take a mile. The government may decide that they do not want just a DNA database of people with specific genetic diseases, they may want a database of everyone for other purposes. They may go for something more than just DNA.

You seem to completely sure that the government is the root of all evils

Because of that, you are willing to lose out on all the benefits associated with government.

The premise for your entire arguement is flawed, the government is not always wrong, therefore, your arguement is wrong. It has a few good points, I'll admit, but its nothing more then fear-mongering.

I never said the government is always wrong or that they are the root of all evil. I do not trust the government to only use the DNA for so-called research and non nefarious reasons. I think the government will use this as a stepping stone to expand its power.

Couldn't it be useful for catching criminals? Because if you know the DNA of everyone in the US, then you are more likely to solve crime.

We are also more likely to solve crime if we put webcams into each and every room in each and every building and outside on street lamps and have dedicated servers to record what each and every person is doing everywhere in this country. But I'm not for that either.

So basically you do not trust them with anything. Thats close enough to being evil, and wrong.

I have a certain level of distrust about how this DNA may be used too (with good historical basis to back me up). But that doesn't matter anyway. Nobody should be collecting DNA without informed consent, period, regardless of what they do with it or might do with it.

I would like to see a national dna database in the UK for many reasons, the primary one is to catch rapists.

How will DNA help catch rapist? The only thing DNA would prove is that they had sex not rape, unless you are talking about statutory rape. Rape cases is usually a matter of he said she said.

I trust them with some things but that trust is only limited. Every American should have a limited trust in their government. They won't adequately secure the border, they have been working year after year to restrict the 2nd amendment, the government spies on people in certain places with cameras and many other things. Why should I have a blind trust in them? I can easily see the government this DNA database for things other than research ,I can see the government using this DNA database as a stepping stone for requiring everyone to submit a DNA sample, I can see them years down the road to maybe secretly using this DNA database for eugenics purposes or maybe planting evidence. It is not the government's job or anyone's to store DNA.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear but fear itself.

No, repeter is talking about research.

Much like organ donation, or donating your body to science once you die - shouldn't this be something that a person would have to donate?

was I gender specific j/rags, if you reply to me don't be, I used the term rapist to encompass all types of rape, only a twerp would not see that, and I don't think you are a twerp.

I have been wrong before

This wasn't directed toward me, but I'd like to give my two cents if I may.

I don't trust the government with much of anything, no.

We have seen what they do with our tax dollars, we see how their misappropriation of military and financial power and resources affects us all, and I am of the thought that the less they have to do with me as an individual, the better.

The last thing I want them to have at their disposal, is a mass holding of the citizenry's DNA.

Absolutely!

This isn't going to end well. Lawsuits are being written as we speak.

well ****4brains please enlighten us as to which types of rape do you think a DNA database could solve that just rounding up suspects couldn't. I do not think you are a **** for brains but I have been wrong in the past before
