We all know it's the liberals fault.

    Re: Debate

    Really good question, btw.

It depends and this is an issue that irritates me a lot, here. There are issues that get folks angry, and expressing that anger is not the problem. It is HOW it is expressed. Remember, PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING. Comments like "all liberals hate America", or "all conservatives are fascists" are flamebait and irrelevant absolutes. They do nothing to further debate; they are inaccurate foolishness that does nothing but demonstrate the hackery and overgeneralized, misrepresentative self-serving attacks of the person making them. Makes THAT person look ridiculous. Best thing one can do in situations like this is one of two things: 1) ignore the person; they've added nothing intelligent to the debate anyway, or 2) confront them on the logical fallacy of their absolute statement, and publicly make them look silly.

Fortunately, we have a lot of good posters here, who are good at both of the above response actions. Folks who do things like that get called on their behavior. Doesn't always stop it, but it does act as a warning for posters on who to really listen to and who to not.

In some cases yes. But not from the point of people hating each other. I think what is more damaging is that hate and vitriol present inside oursevles prevents us from opening ourselves up to debate from within. People find a point and will do everything they can to stick with it, because inside they have so much anger towards the other side of the issue. People bind themselves into absolutes and will not ever consider the perspective of the other side of even having an inkling of truth in it. And when you get the other side of the issue that is equally bound, thats when you get good debate. They will both work to find any research they can to bolster their points. Of course they will both engage in hyperbole and overstate the case, but thats usually easy to weed out and destroy.

I voted no. I think putting "Rootabega" in polls is an example of disruptive behaviours that prevents actual debate.

    Re: Debate

I find often we are all guilty, on occasion, of going into a debate thinking our own stance is all that matters and we are right, no matter. Some posters are alot worse than others and its futile trying to present an opposing viewpoint. Some go further and advocate being the root of epistemology

    Re: Debate

I post on quite few Forums, and this one hands down, has the most personal attacks. The pattern seems to be, if you have no argument, then just slam the poster. It does get tiring, but I don't care. Not like I got anything that important to say any how. Just killin time till I die. hahahhahahahah
