Should you be able to retrieve your credit score and credit report for free?

I'm planning on buying my first house around this time next year and in doing so I'm going through the process of making sure my credit is clean and on the up and up.

The problem is though that I can't continually check my credit report of FICO score to monitor any improvements, without paying some sort of fee.

Do you think that information about you, that can have a serious effects on your financial future, should have to be bought by you?

You can, of course, get 1 free copy of your credit report once a year by all 3 major credit bureaus.

Are all 3 of those major credit bureaus privately owned? If so, it would seem someone has to pay them for their time in compiling those credit reports.

It's maintained by private organizations. If you're wanting to check it to monitor improvements, you don't really need it more than once a year.

Just space them out throughout the year and you'll be fine. For example, get your Equifax report now, your TransUnion report in May, and your Experian report in September. That way you can monitor the changes throughout the year.

I agree that the credit reports should be available for free, so that people can examine them for errors. But I don't necessarily think you should be able to get your credit score for free. There's really no compelling reason you need that, as long as everything on your credit report is accurate.

    I can't. This is important.

Yes on the free credit report, no on the free credit score.

I would say....it's your personal information.

However, someone has to compile it.

Your role is both that of victim and fact checker.

    Hmmmm.

I'd say bill the creditor asking to review it for the additional expense of sending you a copy, since that informs you just who it is that's poking their nose into your business.

Also, you should be informed what that extra fee is, so the creditor can then be caught overcharging you, as that's something all banks can't resist doing.

You're allowed to get it for free once or twice a year now and certainly you ought to have that right. If you want it more often, you can pay for it. After all, it is your information, no matter who compiles it. Those people who compile and maintain it are paid for it by companies who access it to assess your credit worthiness. They owe you the opportunity to make sure the information is correct though, otherwise they are passing on information that may be faulty and that does no one any good.

I do not believe in "credit scores" my credit is bad because I never borrow and because I bought 15 CD's for 1 cent back in 1989 and because I didn't pay the $1,200 doctor visit bill to get eye drops that would have cost me 25 cents in Venezuela (administered without blood pressure and heart rate tests)
