Do you believe in the possibility of a new global war?

Is there still risk of "global war"(between 2 or more of 7 large powers)

You're in a global war now, with Militant Islam, most people are in a creepy denial though.

How much are they spending to attack us? What is the nature of their threat? What should our response be to that threat? What should it cost us to defend ourselves from the threat?

We can't live in our budget. Why shouldn't defense spending be cut when we spent 8X the next highest spender in the world, China?

Where is the Militant Islam army, navy, airforce? How will they attack, and how should we defend? Do we really need to spend 600 billion a year?

Not when you consider that we have more money than the top ten spenders put together.

Are you saying we should size our military based on how much money we have, and not do a zero based budget exercise and assess the threats, and plan our responses, and size the military accordingly?

From WWII, the military was sized to fight major wars on 2 fronts, europe and asia. In the late 80's, as Russia was shown not to be the super power our military industrial complex fooled the public into believing it was (and clearly our intel knew they couldn't even feed their people), the facade was dropped and we now plan to fight one major war. We chose not to continue to dump that much resource into a non existant threat.

We need to do the same thing again, unless someone can show creditable evidence of a navy, air force army, or technology threat to our sovereignty. It doesn't exist.

China is not involved in countless of conflicts at the same time.

Good point. Why do you think they trade internationally like we do, they have a high need for natural resources like we do, and they are not involved in countless conflicts at the same time?

To what extent does the size and offensive capability of the US military encourage its use, where other nations with less military capability deal with the world in other ways, diplomatic, or economic ways?

Thou hast ignored the addendum to the poll question, namely, "(between 2 or more of 7 large powers)".
Well, I consider the Islamic World in general to be monolithic, and therefore a great power.

In addition to that, you are right.

It won't happen anytime soon. Relations between the US, Russia, and China are relatively good right now. Of course, if those relations deteriorate considerably, a global war could be a possibility (although still unlikely).

Well, I consider the Islamic World in general to be monolithic, and therefore a great power.
But as far as I was aware, that is incorrect. Some things the various radical Islamic groups may agree on, but by no means all. Thus "monolithic" is incorrect, IMO.

In addition to that, you are right.

I like being right. Sadly, it doesn't happen enough.

The chance of a new global war is unlikely but possible along civilizational lines.

As for the 'war on terror' its a ...(blank)... war.

you know one of those wars... when one power vastly out powers a small group of people who defer to alternative tactics to have a fighting chance.

Anyways, it doesn't actually count as a global war.

Nah.. Thats just paranoid fear based on a relatively small attack on two relatively meaningless buildings in a big world.

I think the Muslims arguments on the other side of the coin are much more convincing when the Christian world constantly wages war against them, kill their wifes/husbands and kids and try to force on them their ideology.

The global militan Islam stuff is just a delusion created by the elite in the US to smash the will of their own people and grab as much power as they can.

In which scenarios do you think the relations between any of them could deteriorate to such a level that they would engage in war and risk nuclear destruction?

The only scenario I see as possible is that when(because it will) the world runs our of resources and when(because it will) ecological disasters hit, it might become possible that relations could deteriorate significantly and perhaps in addition to global humanitarian disaster, also create global war.

Even if the US refuse to change while Europe and China and other prepare for a different future, I dont believe ideological war will happen to force participants to follow their ideological belief.

if anything, there will probably just be another cold war like situation between major powers

If China makes a serious push to take over Siberia, a war could result that could go nuclear. If Russia decides to reignite the Cold War and reassert its control over Eastern Europe by turning off the gas, tensions between the US and Russia would increase dramatically and might eventually result in a global war. But I don't think it's likely to happen. China will probably come to own Siberia through relatively peaceful means, and Russia won't be able to exert its influence over Eastern Europe for much longer.

The world is not going to run out of resources anytime soon. That's just silly, and shows a lack of understanding for how economics and/or technological progress works.

Are you really 25? Because you sound like you're about 14.

I haven't heard of any European or Chinese politicians of any stature who share your "THE WORLD IS DOOMED RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11" mentality. Could it be that you just made that up, in yet another lame attempt to bash the United States?

This is just a thread coming as a response to being in this thread.
http://www.debatepolitics.com/military/62745-can-chinas-military-strength-rank-second-world.html

The thread is turning into several debates about possibilities of war and future of the military of different states.

So, I am just asking if you believe there is a possibility of global war(war between 2 or more of the 7 biggest powers).
Included in that is not war between any of the big powers against either North Korea and Iran if anyone just might consider them among the 7(which they arent).

So...

A Russian General has stated his wanting of Russia to join with China and other countries to for a Globally Geographically Strategic Alliance.

He said that Total War is the only way to stop the U.S. from it's influence on all of Mankind.

I have always predicted a blindsided attack on the U.S. by China for many reasons, in the future, and now I believe it will be a joint attack by China/Russia when they have lulled the U.S. to feel secure.

That same Russian General has publicly stated his belief that the U.S. Government's story for 9/11 is a fairytale and it was a staged event to change U.S. policies.

As long as there are fools willing to challenge the USA and its allies' superiority, there is always the possibility.

To rule a war out would be unreasonable, as it would deny the existence of irrational people (and leaders).

We should drop a bomb on Mecca, maybe it will ease our paranoia.......;)

No, I was just pointing out that the fact that we spend more on military than the other top spenders is a meaningless fact unless you look at the big picture.

We need to do the same thing again, unless someone can show creditable evidence of a navy, air force army, or technology threat to our sovereignty. It doesn't exist.

Yeah, and you know why that is? Because we have such a huge-ass military. Nobody would dare attack us, except some crazy terrorists who don't actually represent any country.

None of this changes the fact that we only spend 5% of our GDP on defense. Who cares what percent of the total world's defense spending we are? Seeing as how our economy is vastly larger than anyone else's, that's a meaningless statistic in this context.

ya and how relevant is GDP? ever consider or notice how cooked that number really is?

how relevant is the claimed "defense" budget of the US when it spends about 40-50% more than what it claims officially on defense?

and better yet for a question that really gets to the heart of the matter, your in debt and spend more than you need to on defense yet the very make up of the defense program is ill suited to actual national defense and has proven incapable of protecting the US as well as proven incapable of performing the missions it is typical given so why do it that way?

It was the biggest single attack on the U.S., well, ever. Not exactly "relatively small".

We went to war because of Pearl Harbor, and less people died there than on 9/11.

I'm done here; I feel no need to argue with conspiracy theorists.

Are you sure it wasn't this fellow who told you that?

I believe there will be a 3rd world war. Perhaps Isreal, U.S., EU vs. Iran and...China? Well maybe China won't be involved but I'm pretty sure it would be the west against Iran and their allies (if they still have any!).

A "world war" would have to involve two opposing sides which both have a lot of firepower. Iran doesn't qualify. That would just be a regular war.

If the theory of them having nuclear weapons is true, it would be more than a regular war. If Israel attacks them, I'm sure Iran's allies will get involved. I read an article a few months back and it said Russia and China were against Israel attacking Iran.. so if that's true, they could possibly get involved.

It still wouldn't be a global war. At worst, it would just be a regular war with a nuke or two exploding.

Iran doesn't have any allies. At least not any that are going to put their own security on the line to defend Iran.

There's a big difference between them being opposed to an attack, and being willing to counter an attack with military force of their own.

lot more to war than just military force and power

some wars never have a shot fired

having a big expensive military doesn't mean much either when you can be extorted financially, just ask Great Britain and the US, both have been extorted before because they were financially stupid

having said that the US is a debtor nation with many vulnerabilities :)

To rule a war out would be unreasonable, as it would deny the existence of irrational people (and leaders).

It is the U.S. that is constantly doing all the challenges since WWII.

One example is upsetting China from sticking our nose in the affairs of China & Taiwan...Communist-ruled China split with Taiwan amid civil war in 1949 and continues to regard the self-governing democracy as part of its territory. Beijing has warned of a disruption in ties with Washington if the sale goes ahead, but has not said what specific actions it would take.

As far as dumb enough to challenge the U.S......

China currently has an operational Carrier Killer Weapon System which the U.S. has no defense against. This system uses a supporting network of satellites, radar, and unmanned aerial vehicles(Drones) to track every U.S. ship.

These Carrier Killer Missiles fly at Mach10 (10x speed of sound) and use evasive flight manuevers making the U.S. defenseless against them.

It only takes one strike with these to destroy even the largest Aircraft Carrier the U.S. has.

Using their Satellite tracking system China is capable of destroying every ship the U.S. has in less than 30 min.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of China's capabilities which you will not hear about in the U.S. propaganda bubble.

And as ridiculous as the idea of a US-China war is, it is still only a two-party affair, not a world war.

Duh.
