I think Elton John would follow Lennon on that list.

Exactly. If we're off-list anyway, we might as well mention a true master musician, adept a numerous instruments, and who had a profound impact on modern music.

Had your question asked "songwriter" I would have chosen John Lennon.
 
If Stevie Ray Vaughn was on the list Id vote for him. But since hes not I'll vote for Clapton.
