what do i need to do to get the best price when i'm selling or buying something?

negociate.

what do i need to do to fix it, to make it work, until i can "actually" fix it.

ingenuity.

food for thought.

I do not find racism funny and as long as there are people that think racism is ok in this country? Racism will never go away. So you keep getting your kicks off being a jerk and I will keep hoping for the day that racism is no longer an issue in my country.

I am of the thought that you can still have a wicked sense of humor without having to bring race into something. Of course I am mature like that. :2razz:

I'm of the mind that it is the people that get offended are the ones that keep racism alive. After all, if you show a bully that you've no interest in him/her then they will eventually go away favoring reactions more than non-reactions.

It doesn't really bother me. There are ethnic idioms I use myself (Indian-giver etc.) that fall into the same category.

LOL M. Steele (RNC Chairman) said "Honest Injun" on Hannity. I imagine we'll be hearing more about that even though he didn't mean anything racial by it.

i voted for the second choice.

here's another to think about. just "nigger rig it" or a variation there of.

mtm1963

I hear that (n rig it) all time here in N.C. and wanna smack people for saying it. :2razz:

Man, have we ever changed! Twenty years ago, no-one would even bother asking.
IMO, we have become overly politically correct.
This phrase (jew down) is just old common usage, I see nothing evil, bad, insulting about it at all. In another twenty years it may just die out.

Here is a novel idea.. How about just calling it trying to get someone to lower a price? What is so hard about that?

Not really. Sometimes you have to kick a bullies ass to get em to leave you alone which is why we should and do confront racism in this country.

Because humans have a fundamental "need" (for lack of a better term) to catagorize and make that catagorizing as simple as possible. For example "text speek". Instead of saying "laugh out loud" or "I love you" people have gotten to the point where they instead say "lol" or "I <3 U".

In my experiance (and believe me being the runt at all the schools that I went to gave me ALOT) if I tried to kick the bullies ass then 1 of two things would happen. 1: I would instead get my ass kicked. or 2: if I did happen to kick the bullies ass then the bully would bring friends next time around. My experiance taught me that the best course of action was to not give a reaction. That is all that a bully wants, is attention. Don't give it to him and he will go away.

Except you seem to be confused as to who is the bully here. YOU are the one spouting abusive language and feigning offense over minor things (for which you were not even present).

No one is hurt if people jokingly use racial slurs or stereotypes around their friends, whom they know won't be offended.

I'm not Jewish, but I have Jewish ancestry.

I don't like "jewed me down" or any other phrase that equates being Jewish with parsimony, cheapness or financially cheating. I've met enough people who use the phrases with genuine bigotry in them.

It's disgusting how many people have found it okay to tell me about how they got screwed in business because the other party was Jewish.

Even if the phrase is neutral to you, it doesn't mean that it is in someone else's mouth. You could wind up conveying an idea that you really don't intend. I'd suggest a different choice of words, honestly.

Good point. As the poll results indicate, a majority of people find the phrase offensive. Looks like it's better to avoid it.

A buddy of mine used this the other day. He's an electrician and owns his own business. He was talking about how some customers try to jew him down on prices, and other aggravations of running his business. There aren't many Jews around here, so I know he was using this phrase as an idiom, not because he's a bigot. Plus, I know he's not a bigot.

What do you think of the phrase?

It's a term used to vent frustration, not express hatred of a group.

Jews like bargains, so if he's frustrated with everyone trying to get a bargain on his prices, the term actually seems quite appropriate outside a professional setting.

It's not something I would say while bidding for the job, though.

Well, of course. Everyone knows that the only people who like bargains are Jews.

And, two posts later, someone comes in to handily illustrate my point. Thanks Jerry! You're awesome as an object lesson.

Yep, what about the Chinese? ;) They are stingy hard bargainers. A cunning race if ya ask me... ;)

It's just because those Orientals are so darn inscrutable.

You're quite welcome :2wave:

After reading the post on political correctness, I'm now more likely to use the term so as to vent frustration on political correctness

Spiteful and petty, yes, but I'm ok with that.

It's just because those Orientals are so darn inscrutable.

Exactly! They are all smiles, nods, and polite bows, meanwhile stabbing their hapless victims in the back. :2razz: Totally unlike the noble Nordic peoples of the North! ;)

Its just a saying, but I suppose it would be offensive to the Jewish people.

Have you heard of the expression of being 'ninja'd"?

One example are No Income No Job or Assets loans....that is, creditors who loan to people they shouldn't because those people can't pay.

A loan applicant who is given the loan, gets into trouble when they can't pay, and has their house foreclosed on, might say their house were 'ninja'd" from them.

My fellow WoW addicts are more than familiar with ninja looters and vault ninjas.

It's a term to express when something has been taken from you through deceptive means. It is not a term to express hatred of Asians.

I will say that the term came about out of racism and bigotry. Same as one using the term N-word rigged, which is definitely offensive. Why not so for Jews?

There is a difference in the two idioms. 'Nigger' is an inherently highly inflammatory and derogatory word (when used by a non-Black). 'Jew' is just a regular word.

You mean "nigger rig"?

Urban Dictionary: nigger rig

It's ok to say the word when you're not using it in a derogatory context. Here we're just tossing out potentially offensive terms, we're not actually using them.
