Is Glenn Beck a reporter or an entertainer

Should Glenn Beck be treated as a legitimate reporter or as an entertainer?

I don't understand the point of this thread. No one is claiming that Glenn Beck is a journalist. We all know he is an entertainer / political commentator, but this, in no way, precludes him from being informative or reporting on substantive issues.

I don't understand all the outrage people display over him. He's no worse than any of the other people on TV, and at least he isn't pretending to be a journalist like some people are...

I'd say he's more like a warrior.

Beck is an entertainer and I think he's very good at what he does. He claims to be a libertarian and the "facts" he talks about on his show are put through that over the top, twisted, libertarian lens he carries around. The same exact "facts" would be handled very differently by republican, democrat or centrist commentators. The "facts" are not really the issue, if they are indeed facts (and I'm not saying they're not, I have found myself agreeing with Beck on numerous occasions). The issue is the spin each commentator will put on the exact same set of "facts". Beck is excellent at spinning things in just the right loony libertarian way. I totally love him.

He's not a libertarian. His socially conservative stance on drugs and prostitution precludes him from assuming that label.

He said he is in favor of decriminalizing marajuana. Not sure about other drugs. He said he used to have a different position, but now he's a libertarian, and he adopted the libertarian position on drugs.

Not sure about prostitution.

Are you sure? Grim hasn't voted yet. He might claim Beck is a journalist.
I'm not sure the point of the thread either, tho, tbh.

TED - what's the point?

Edit: Never mind, just located the thread that gives this thread a point http://www.debatepolitics.com/bias-media/63411-glenn-beck-case-closed-facts-2009-a.html

You should write to him and ask him to not label himself as such. I heard him say the words "I am a libertarian". I can't remember if it was on his show or if it was on O'Reilly's, but he did say it. I think he has no idea what a libertarian is, personally.

I've never heard him say he's a libertarian. When was that?

Are you certain you're not thinking of John Stossel? I know I've heard him say that on O'Reilly's show. I'm not saying you are incorrect- I've just never heard Beck say that.

One of the few shows of his I watched.

Edit: Here's a couple YouTubes. First one, he says he's a libertarian, and is interviewing a guy about legalizing marijuana. Second one, he's decided that marijuana does need to be legalized.

No, it was definitely Beck. I don't even know who John Stossel is.

ETA: I see others have posted links. I knew I wasn't crazy. LOL

Glenn Beck, and others in his field, project themselves as beacons of truth when they're on the air and then and to hide behind words like "opinion" and "commentator" and "entertainer" when they get caught totally screwing up.
I don't think you'll find -any- of them "hiding" behind their "commentator" status when they make a mistake -- what they WILL do is (correctly) respond to charges that they are not "fair and balanced" with the fact that they -are- commentators, not reporters, and are therefore under no requirement to be either.

If you'd like to provide an example of them doing so...

Some find it necessary to create straw men for them to beat down.

I'd be curious to see what those that think of Beck as an assclown, et al, think of the whacko commentators on the left.

Actually I think I've heard him say he was libertarian.

Because not everyone is as much of a partisan hack as you...?

Irony alert, irony alert! This is not a drill. All hands man your irony stations. I repeat, this is not a drill!

Why haven't you voted, Goobie? I'm interested in your choice.

How about Ed Schultz? I wish he would have a major, miraculous conversion to conservatism so we could blame him on you guys. I enjoy Olberman when I actually watch the show, but not for his political commentary, but for his sense of humor(note, I think the same of O'Rielly).

Sorry. :) That particular nutball of hate is all yours.
