France is considering banning verbal abuse between husbands and wives, and other various domestic partners.

If you insult your wife or husband repeatedly, you could soon find yourself in court if you live in France.

The charge? Psychological violence.

That's what the new offence will be called if a bill backed by the government is passed by parliament.

Once considered a purely private domain, rows between married or cohabiting couples could now prompt intervention from the state.

The French government wants to take the controversial step of introducing a new law banning "psychological violence" between married couples or partners living together.

I'm wary of any law like this. Firstly, such a thing would be very difficult to prove. Secondly, unless the law deals with only the extreme cases the gray areas will get ugly. If a few mean comments are enough to become a criminal matter I would strongly oppose the law.

If there is compelling evidence of what is clearly psychological abuse along with a solid reason why the criminal justice system is a better option than divorce, however, I could get behind a prosecution.

I vote it's none of my business because I don't live in France.

Then why did you click on the poll?

Obviously, I'm bringing up the subject for opinion, since I read the article about this happening in France. Some states in the U.S. might follow suit. It may be the beginning of a trend.

If you have no opinion, there are many other threads at this site that may interest you...

Skateguy asked (Do they still eat snails???)

Yes they do.

Quite what that fact has to do with this proposed idiotic law is beyond my understanding, but doubtless it makes sense to you.

Nothin--I was just getting a tad hungry is all.

What France should be bared from--is making bad cars.

What constitutes "psychological violence"?

This is the kind of law that is passed in a liberal Utopia.

The French should criminalize being French, lock themselves up and throw away the key.

1- I didn't

2- I'll pay attention if it comes up for my state

3- That was my opinion and it's quite valid

I agree with this. I think it's a nice idea, but it needs to be reserved for the most extreme cases or not implemented at all.

Heck no. It is entirely in the eyes of the beholder what constitutes 'psychological violence'. If you're walking down the sidewalk bantering with your wife/husband and someone over hears and thinks that what we are saying should not be said to any individual and he/she calls the cops and tells them what was said then what happens?

This is what they call a slippery slope law. Might start with extreme cases but it will lead to the most inane of jokes being decriminalized. And possibly being extended to "hate speech".

And the most important part of all.

It interferes with freedom of speech. Don't get me wrong, I don't hold with verbally abusing anyone. But sometimes there's just nothing that should be done by the government because something else far larger is at stake. Besides, that's what divorce is for.

France is trying to make a law in which couples can't argue with each other?

Good frakkin' luck.

There wasn't an option for "in rare cases," so I picked "sometimes". Psychological abuse can definitely harm, but, definitions would have to be so subjective as to make the law almost totally unenforceable.

Hell no, they shouldn't criminalize it. Some people live for that crap. It's called Drama and it gives people meaning in their lives and something to bitch and moan about.;)

Some French people are real short in much the same way that other nationalities have people who are also real short.

Skateguy posted(What France should be bared from--is making bad cars.)

Not entirely certain what France is bared from.

France makes some pretty good cars although sometimes when they introduce electronics into a vehicle they have a habit of going wrong, as in for example:

Renault 25 was introduced with an electronic voice simulator that advised the driver the vehicle was running low on fuel.

I picked up a Renault 25 from Paris drove it about 8KM / 5 miles whereupon it informed me the fuel tank was nearly empty, upon my filling the gas tank, it continued informing me thereafter every 3 minutes that the vehicle was running short of fuel.

I exchanged the car for another one once I arrived in Lyon.

This is ridiculous. Maybe they should contract for parents, too, since grown adults don't seem capable of handling their business without government interference.

No, this is not a big enough issue to be a criminal matter. Let couples work out their fights on their own, the government shouldn't be involved.

France, a bastion of stupidity.

They should just make it legal for her to shoot the bastard. ;)
