I think this certainly does point to a problem though, and the problem is in both camps. It only takes one or two liberals or conservatives acting the ass to get the whole of liberals or conservatives seen as being asses. Me personally, I welcome it when conservatives act the ass, since it's easy to point out and argue against. However, when liberals do it, it's winceworthy for me. Every ridiculous accusation of racism where none is present, every comment about Bush being a criminal, every over the top "teabagger" reference makes me grind my teeth. We really do need to police our own more often, and call out those on the same side of the political fence more often when they make asshole type comments.
The other thing this speaks to, and something I find very sad is the "well they did it, now it's our turn". Just because some liberals called Bush a nazi does not justify in any way calling Obama a nazi. Just because some conservatives acted the ass when Kennedy dies does not justify acting the as when a conservative has health problems. We need to somehow bring this attitude to an end. It does not further any cause, it does not help make your points, and it really is kinda shameful. Political discourse should not be on the same level as school ground fights.
