Janet Napolitano is quoted as saying the recent incident where the Nigerian attempted to blow up a plane, proof that they system works as it should. To me this is an ultimate example of spin, and insults my intelligence.

I mean even though the man was warned about, and refused a student visa in the U.K., he was issued a visa for the U.S., got bomb material past security, and if not for a civilian may have succeed in downing a plane. If this proves the system works I've got some ocean front property to sell you in my home state of Indiana.

What do you think?

I know somebody will get miffed and ping me for this, but Napolitano probably didn't want to profile a black man since our President is black. Instead, she spent time profiling white conservative, anti-abortion, Christian gun owners as potential terrorists. I wonder how many resources were spent trying to discover why we white conservatives owned guns and were buying ammo and for what nefarious purposes?

I find her backpedaling, claiming that what she really meant to say was that the response to the attack was executed perfectly, to be beyond laughable. The system obviously does not work and the war in Afghanistan is now a total waste of time as it seems that the threat has moved to Yemen.

The terrorists have no safe haven in those countries.

Yemen 22 were arrested recently.

Pakistan is pushing them hard killing scores.

They have no safe haven from the US and its allies.

I hope you're right.

Attempted bombing spotlights al Qaeda growth in Yemen | Reuters

Civil war and lawlessness have turned the Arab world's poorest state into an attractive alternative base for al Qaeda, which U.S. officials say has been largely pushed out of Afghanistan and is under growing military pressure from the Pakistani army in bordering tribal areas.

Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, is charged with attempting to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane as it approached Detroit on a flight from Amsterdam with almost 300 people on board.

In U.S. questioning, Abdulmutallab claimed that al Qaeda operatives in Yemen supplied him with an explosive device and trained him on how to detonate it, an official said.

Al Qaeda's presence in Yemen has grown over the last year and Washington fears it could become a central base of operations outside Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to U.S. counterterrorism officials and experts.

Only if one defines the system working as inversely proportional to whether or not the mechanism, itself, worked, could one possibly claim the system works.

When I went to the airport to pick my Son up for the Holidays, I witnessed airport security doing it's thing. The took a small child, maybe 3 or 4 in her stroller away from her Mother, and gave the stroller a thorough going over. the poor child was crying loudly for her Mother, who had to remain about 5 yards away. People just stood and watched as they put this Family through this.---so I will say this, "If we have become so sheepish, and so fearful of the sky fallin that we will put our children through this, all in the name of saftey, we have truly lost the American spirit of fearlessness". No wonder the World has lost respect for us. we act like sissys, for all the world to see. butch up America, and face the future boldly like you have a pair.

Well they can start by paying the security people a decent wage.

What they may not pay them per person, they sure make up for with volume. there more security guards, then passengers, or regular airport personal. All just having their way with people. take off your hat, your belt, your sweater, your shoes. I say screw that. Grow a set. ----I would ride, "Freedom Airlines", where anybody boarding, that didn't have a gun, would be issued one.---Let a terrorist try that flight. Buncha blanket clinchers:(

Exactly right, quality over quantity. If the Airports were run by Casino owners it would be a whole different ballgame.

Last Chrismas, I had one of them make fun of my Christmas shirt. He was all full of his power, and was calling out to the rest of his cronies, to look at my shirt, then laughing loudly. tha Jerk. If I weren't there to pick up my Son, I would have gone to jail.--I wanted that fat boy bad. I'd break him of suckin eggs.

I had a fatboy TSA treat me like an idiot because I didn't push my carry on through the scanner right away. My fatboy was at the Tampa airport.

So if a bomb did get through you'd say at least we weren't sissies? Personally a personal search is a small price to pay vs. taking a free fall at 30,000 feet with a few limbs missing and half burned.

We live in different times that require we "grow a couple" and quit whining about searches before we board. ;)

I'm not 100% sure what we're going for here. I mean, there will never be a 100% system wherein we are never at risk. There will always be something which gets through the cracks. Some people take this as license to excuse government usurpation of powers and improper action; but even then it would be hard to make something 100% in this case even with total Big Brother government. I'd rather take the risk and be free than to run crying and whining to the government about being saved. But regardless, this guy got on and the passengers and air marshals stopped it. Good for them, highlights the natural resistance now posed to terrorists on a plane. But we shouldn't pretend like there will never be attempts anymore just because we made highly annoying security and such. Maybe in this case there should have been more done since there seemed to be a bit of information about this guy which authorities should have acted on. But in general, we should note that there will be attempted terrorist attacks from time to time. Of those attempts, every so often one will be successful. That's it. We're not 100% safe, never will be if freedom is what we strive for. Still, terrorism has less probability of affecting me than say drunk drivers. So since I'm not freaking out about drunk drivers, I'm not going to freak out about terrorists.

to live in fear of death, is to already be dead in Spirit. We all go someday. It is how we face our Mortality, that defines who we are. Fear should not enter into the equation. Nor should we change our behavior because of it. ---we should have carried on with business as usual after 911. Nobody wants to die, clutching at damp sheets, while trembling with fear.

Who's afraid? I'm not. I say those who are whining about searches are the ones that are afraid. If you're scared of showing your penis or breasts in a scanner that's the true meaning of silly fear if you ask me. Last I knew we all have similar body parts being homo sapiens. When I hear people afraid to show what's under their clothes to a person that most likely has no interest whatsoever or is more intent on looking for objects i just shake my head in disbelief.

All I'm saying is a few extra minutes before being boarded is much less an inconvenience then your plane going in to decompression in the least or coming apart at the extreme.

And I would bet anything some of the same people that don't want their right violated would be the first ones to scream government incompetence when a plane blows up.

Just don't go Nakid in yer Kitchen, some old prude will have ya arrested.----As far as X-Rays of any kind--"Unlawful search and seizure" come to mind. No big deal in this time of much hand wringing.

I can't remember.. someone remind me.. did the plane crash? How many people died?

They might as well let people take this PETN stuff on planes. The shoe bomber tried the same thing, and no one was hurt there either. It doesn't work.

The system worked fine in this case. If anything, they are already too restrictive.

I want the old days back, when you bought yer ticket, and boarded the plane. Much like we do on a bus today. No worries about anything. No ID check, no anal probing. We knew it may be our last ride, ---we were going flying after all. But back then fear was not as common as today. Seems so much is done out of fear of one thing or another.Maybe fear makes it easier for people to be controlled. ---I have never been a very brave person. but even I find it embarrassing.----we use to run with scissors

I'd strip naked if I had too. No big deal to me.

The system failed in both cases. I don't remember how the shoe bomber was stopped but in the latest case there may have been a hole in the side of the plane if it had not been for a civilian that had no connection to security jumping the perp.

Two strokes of good luck. The next time we may not be so lucky.

There is an old saying, and it's true. If you give up your liberty for safety, soon you will have none. I too have witnessed these bully boys and their antics. They seem to love to pick out old gray haired people. They singled me out because I looked to fit for an old guy. Their words, too. Then the guy in Detroit said I didn't talk like I was from Detroit. Hell, he didn't even sound like he was American, more like the mideast. Being from the south, I don't talk like I'm from Detroit. Duh!

From what I read no air marshal was aboard, and the only thing that kept this guy from blowing up the plane was that the device malfunctioned and blew up in his face. You're probably getting this story mixed up with another one involving a Nigerian man who locked himself in the bathroom. This prompted complaints from other passengers, probably because they couldn't use the bathroom, not because they thought the man was acting suspiciously.

Well, next time you go through the screeners, and they tell you to remove your shoes, remove all your clothes. Tell them you have nothing to hide.
