I'm going to change search engines. Recommendations?

How important is search to you? Are you a recreational 'net user, or is it part of your work? What kinds of things do you search for? There are a few specialized engines that may work out all right for you.

Honestly, though? If you switch, you're going to see a loss in quality. Google is top of the heap at the current time.

I hear Bing's adequate. May want to give them a try.

I like Google. I use Bing every now and then, but only when I'm ordering stuff online to take advantage of their cashback program. Ordered two iPods a couple of weeks ago from Walmart through Bing and will get back over $100. MS is desperate, so they're bribing people to use Bing

What about Yahoo? I just tried a search using them and like their layout and results. As far as computer use, I'm purely a recreational user.

Heh, I use swagbucks once or twice a day for the bribe factor, too. They give you points for searching and buying through their site, which I turn around and use to get amazon GCs.

Never heard of swagbucks. I'll check 'em out ..thanks

I don't do a lot of shopping online, except for big ticket items such as traveling, hotels, airline tickets. Also, hard to find items. Other than that I prefer to shop locally whenever feasible.

When you have religious Christians making an outcry over how a business that answers the phone with "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" and when you have non-Christians making an outcry over how a business that answers the phone with "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays," yeah, people are that intolerant of others.

Has there actually been any nonchristians complaining about that?

I think that Christmas logo is suppose to represent Christmas postal cards, and I'm guessing the moon with the peace sign is suppose to have something to do with the recent information NASA released about the moon. I have no clue what the other images represent, but it has to mean something.

That's something I really wonder.

I will happily accept greetings for anything from Christmas to Hanukkah to Holi, the Hindu festival of colors.

Well wishes, whatever the stripe, are supposed to be good things, right?

I'm a little aghast at the insistence on Merry Christmas, honestly. What if the person offering the greeting is not Christian? What if they are devout Christians who object to the commercialization of Christmas, and prefer not to sully their holy day with associations with a place of commerce?

Also, aren't pleasantries a voluntary thing? Am I entitled to someone saying "how are you?" or telling me to have a nice day? Forced wishes are meaningless ones.

I don't think anyone truly is offended by "Merry Christmas" and I don't think anyone should be offended by the lack of that greeting, either.

I haven't used yahoo in several years. For most of their span, they've been a directory of sites, technically, rather than a search engine, and I found that their results were not as inclusive as google's. I also found the big list of paid-for listings at the top of the results kind of annoying.

I've read that Bing is powering yahoo's search now, though, so, results will probably be better.

I would like to complain about the poll options in this poll. Where is the option "google serves a worldwide customer base, so avoiding religious imagery is in it's best interest as a business"? Where is an option for "I think the term 'politically correct' is overused to bitch about things I just don't like"? Where is the option "I want the 30 seconds I wasted reading the OP back"?

If this bothers anyone, you can contact google at press@google.com

Dear Google,

It bothers me that people are bothered by your choice of a Christmas logo for your search engine home page.

It is odd the same people typically complaining about perceived political correctness are the same ones who push people and entities to this state of correctness because they decide to bitch and make issues out of mundane things.

Well, I changed my search engine. I know some of you think it's silly, but to me it's important. I liked Google's previous policy better, where they acknowledged various religious days. I know I can't change their decision, but I can change the search engine I use.

Yahoo doesn't do anything special on their search page, but at least I won't be irritated by blase' images that remind me of what I view as a cultural loss and decay in the Western World.

I'm glad I brought the subject up, even though some seem to feel that should make me an object of ridicule and derision. God Bless you all, Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Did you know that Vague, the owner of this site, did not wish any one here a merry christmas? Based on that, you should change message boards too.

It appears that you and I disagree regarding this and that you really don't understand where I'm coming from. There's no point in discussing it further with you, is there?

Seriously... a coworker of mine is a strict Jehovah's Witness, are people going to get insulted if he doesn't wish them a merry Christmas? As I see it, it's more insulting to wish him a merry Christmas. I work in a toy store, this season I was wishing people whatever holiday it actually was... Eid, Hannukah, Solstace, whatever. It seemed more appropriate.

the things we worry about---and I thought I was bad. hahahhahahahha

they just used the commercial aspect of christmas,

Well Google is engaged in commerce...it isn't a church.

at the very least they could've had santa or something,

Santa isn't part of the commercial aspect of Christmas?

what exactly does a space ship and a peace sign have to do with christmas.

I don't know. Nothing as far as I can tell, but maybe they're popular icons in some other part of the world.

It seems more and more prevalent that whenever the site changes its front page logo, it looks less and less like the "oogle." Pretty soon its just gonna be a "G" followed by some random pictures.

And the "G" isn't always in the recognizable google typeface. Looks crappy.

I'm just betting that everyone who complains here about Google's Christmas tribute is going to continue using Google search. :) Personally I thought it was way more creative than just a typical cliche Christmas tree and Reindeer logo.

Here's a blog piece that addresses this. According to one respondent 'Happy Holidays' is strictly an American phrase used to avoid saying the 'C' word.
Google doodles a "Happy Holidays" - Pocket-lint

I think I'm going to boycott Google. They honor every other stupid day on their site, but want to pretend that Christmas doesn't exist?

I think it's time that people who are bothered by this make our voices heard, just like the whiners who are exorcising Christmas from our cultural landscape have done.

Yes...all three of you are really going to hurt Google...go for it.
