If we could stem it or shut it down for a while to fix it, that'd be great. We're full of our own poor, tired, **** on, huddled masses at the moment and can't take on any more. Unless some corporate types want to immigrate here and bring their business with them

    Yes, of course.

We're overrun and we need to stop the invasion and get our feet back under us. Then we can decide who we'll allow in, and if we should merely shoot invader-enablers or simply confiscate all their property. That'll depend on the circumstances of the time.

Legal immigration should only be suspended in a drastic emergency. It's good for the country. However, in such a drastic emergency, of course you should suspend it for the course of the emergency.
Being invaded by thirty million Mexicans is drastic emergency enough. If not after an invasion comprising almost 10% of the native population, then when?

It is absolutely nuts to deny immigration to ANY person with at least a bachelor's degree, as long as their legal record is clean and they don't have any easily transmissible diseases. For people with a bachelor's degree or better, we should have a completely open-door immigration policy. These are the people that will create new American companies and employ lots of Americans. When I was in business school, many of my classmates grumbled about how they couldn't stay in the United States after they graduated due to companies being unwilling to sponsor them (thanks to our cumbersome immigration process), so they ended up going back home. And these were MBAs for God's sake.

We also need people to do less skilled tasks, and unfortunately our own citizens have priced themselves out of the market through minimum wage hikes and unionization. If immigrants are willing to do these jobs for less money, so be it, as long as they come at a manageable rate. Personally I think that our current amount of unskilled immigration (including both legal and illegal) is about right...they just need to be spread out throughout the country better. Perhaps our government could offer illegal immigrants conditional amnesty, or offer legal immigrants an expedited path to citizenship, if they pledge to relocate to a part of the country that doesn't have as many immigrants.

As for the whole "THEY TOOK ERR JEERRRBS" refrain from nativist Americans...frankly I don't have much sympathy. There is nothing stopping Americans from getting the training or education they need to succeed. One of the crowning achievements of our country is our public college/university system: Even the poorest Americans can put themselves through four years of college or whatever type of vocational school they want. This anti-immigrant sentiment is really no different from "The white man is keeping me down" or any other kind of race-baiting excuse to blame someone else for one's own failures in life.

Stopping it entirely? No. Overhauling the system, absolutely. We need to fix a very broken system and come down a lot harder on illegal immigration. It ought to be easier (or at least faster) to become a legal citizen, but we ought to be picky about who we allow in. Those who attempt to get in illegally need to either go back to the back of the line or be denied the opportunity to ever become a citizen. There's a right way and a wrong way to do it, those who choose the wrong way need to have consequences for their actions.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Kick 'em out & keep 'em out, until I don't have to press 1 for english....
A moratorium for 20 years would enable us to rid ourselves of the alleged 12 million illegals....
I'd wager that 12M figure is a lowball estimate by far....

Check out BELIZE. It is a former british colony (British Honduras). It is the only country in central America that speaks English.

Belize, I have been told, is basically libertarian. A Belize citizen (a former US citizen) I recently met, said it was "paradise."

Want to go there? It isn't easy.

First, Belize has a strict immigration limit of 500 families per year. That's it.

Second, you and your family must pass "rigorous scrutiny."

Third, after you have passed these hurdles, you must shell out $75,000 to $85,000 American dollars to purchase your citizenship.

Contact the Belize Consolate or Embassy-- Call 1-202-332-9636 for more information.

I wonder if the US should adopt a similar policy.

I've been there. It's a parliamentary democracy modeled after the British system, and it's a Commonwealth nation. You don't buy your permanent residence but you must prove that you have at least $30,000 in the bank when you apply for it. It's why a lot of retirees go there. Their immigration law even waives some of the requirements if you're retired and have money saved.

Absolutely not. Immigration is part of what makes this country great. That's not to say it shouldn't be controlled or limited, but an indefinite suspension of immigration is out of the question.

The only solution is a fence, but for some reason, lots of people think it's a CRAZY idea to secure your borders.

I wonder how much money Switzerland has to spend on illegal aliens...
