Military alone will win in Afghanistan

Some users here think that the path to victory in Afghanistan is purely military and discount all other aspects of COIN.

So do you agree military alone will win in Afghanistan?

Obviously it will take more than just the military to win. The military is a big part of the strategy, not the whole strategy.

You wouldn't get that reading some users' posts here. Merely bringing up historical examples of successful COIN that focused on development gets you nothing but insults.

There are some in this debate think things like relative body counts matter in an operation like this, which is just retarded. I don't have the answer for Afghanistan. I don't have the knowledge or skill to create a comprehensive strategy. That is why I don't debate the topic. Unfortunately, alot who have even less knowledge than me love to jump in there and make a fool of themselves.

There is nothing to win in Afghanistan. You supporting a corrupted and poll rigging regime? Send 30k more troops and pull out by 2012 and then civil war starts.

The military in Afghanistan is like sandbags holding back a flood. It works okay in an emergency, but it's not really a replacement for a more permanent piece of infrastructure. So no, the military alone isn't going to 'win' in Afghanistan. Unless we can somehow get them taking care of their own country, things are going to fall apart as soon as the military leaves.

Adding more troops is an important piece of moving operations forward, rather than letting them stagnate. Eventually a cohesive strategy that builds and imporves infrastructure and education, as well as forming bonds or at least agreeable conditions between national government and tribal leaders is key.

The key to victory in Afghanistan is indefinite occupation. The children of soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan will also see tours of duty there.

How about we take those tax dollars and improve our infrastructure and education?

Infrastructure can be improved but over time it will go back to decaying. And education is a waste because many students would still not be learning.
