Americans want to believe it is Great Britain, but most Europeans and geopolitical analysts say it is Germany. What do you think?

Probably Germany in terms of economic might. The UK in terms of political/military might.

Germany has a STRONGER ARMY. It could easily defeat GB if it were 1v1.

Germany, economics define todays power.

It is all about the sea, of which Germany is seriously lacking (not considering access).

Not really. If the German effort was there they could build a good navy comparable to GB and then the fight would be all over for GB.

I'm suprised noone has said Russia? Maybe not enough posts yet.

Many people don't see Russia as a part of Europe....
Erroneous, but true.....;)

fair enough, but Russia has had a lot more of it's history involved with Europe then with Asia.

Russia cannot properly fund a serious war machine with oil alone. With an economy primarily driven on oil exports (and exports in general), the act of war would do much to temporarily sever many or all trade ties during conflict.

I have no doubt Germany could become a major military power given time and need. However, it is France that is the major military power in Europe, not GB. IMHO of course or until they surrender:mrgreen:

What? The UK have almost no say in the EU. France is the political power, Germany the military power. As long as these two cooperate, the power of the UK is virtually meaningless.

No UK policies have been implemented in Europe the past 30 years.

Germanys army is weak. France and the UK have the strongest current military power in Europe aside from Russia.

Germany have the most military potential however, and clearly the biggest industry.

Russia ... duh

No they don't. The UK military is well better than that of Germany. Just because Germany can call up a lot of people doesn't mean that their military complex is better than the UK.

That's all crap within Europe doing stupid crap. Overall for global concerns, out of Europe it's the UK which is listened to the most. It's almost always America and the UK. France can talk about crap with the EU, but worldwide no one cares about the EU. The biggest power out of Western Europe is the UK in terms of military and politics.

That's because Europe is often though of in terms of East and West.

The Kingdom of Liechtenstein

when it was invaded by the Swiss in 2005, it defended by sheer awesomeness alone:

Liechtenstein: no retaliation for Swiss 'invasion' | World news | guardian.co.uk
According to the Swiss daily Blick, around 170 infantry soldiers from the famously neutral country wandered more than a mile across the unmarked border with the tiny principality.

As well as the obligatory Swiss army knives, the troops were armed with assault rifles -

Markus Amman, an interior ministry spokesman, said nobody in Liechtenstein had even noticed the soldiers.

WOOO

It's all about GDP.

1 United States 14,441,425
2 Japan 4,910,692
3 China 4,327,448h
4 Germany 3,673,105
5 France 2,866,951
6 United Kingdom 2,680,000

8 Russia 1,676,586
Simply couldn't compete in a new arms race.

LOL....shows how much you know. Germany has one of the best army in the world and when compared to that of France. Germany would most likely win the war, however against UK. I'm not too sure. Germany has a very good arsenal. H&K guns are considered the best in the world. And the GSG9 is one of the best special forces in the world and it is being used in Afghanistan. France wouldn't stand a chance against the Germans.

Russia doesn't have much strength these days, things need to change. I would consider it powerful just because of it's sheer size but with jets the distance becomes much shorter. Russia doesn't have the numbers of modern aircraft or ships to stand a chance against the UK. And in land, the Russians would easily be defeated by the Germans or UK, not the French though! And nukes don't do much good nowadays. No nation on this earth currently can use nukes and get away with it.

Not really. The French are notorious for giving up. And the people in the UK would rather drink, and the Russians' would rather not try just pretend. That is why Germany is the strongest.

You forgot about the german guilt trauma though.

yeah, but that is a generational thing. Most young Germans cannot associate themselves with what their parents went through or their grandparents. And when I was there, I felt that the younger Germans were going to make sure that their country was strong(militarily) again.

I don't know where was there, but last time I checked, I got the sense they were still in the proces of uniting west & east.

The most powerful nation in europe is not even listed in the poll, that would be the U.S.

When was that?
What I meant was that the younger people are adjusting and remembering their history. Sure the older generation is having a hard time but when they pass, it will be all over. And Germany will come to be a serious power militarily. They already make good weapons that are exported in large numbers so they already have the industry there. They just need to rid themselves of the past.

Few weeks ago.

Sure, but that still influences their military power today, doesn't it.
