I don't get it. The economy was terrible under FDR but he gets a "hey at least you tried" award but Ronald Reagan was president over a good economy. He gets called the worst ever? Makes no sense at all.

There are other measures of ability of a president than the economy. Reagan grew the deficit at an unheard of rate, and then of course there is Iran-Contra. I do not think that is enough to make him worst, but I think that makes the point clear.

I think my pick would have to be Carter, if just because he was such a disappointment. He was of my party, and we had high hopes for him, but ended up being incredibly ineffective.

Reagan was good. I think there were a lot of shady dealings in his time though, and it takes away. But nothing so overt and in defiance of the Constitution as what FDR pulled off. That guy is amongst the worst of our Presidents ever.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the ass hole responsible for giving our country's money over to private banks.

Is there really any question?

As Chris Rock says...."George W. Bush in not just the worst President of the United States, he is the worst PResident of Presidents....PTA President......"

Then again, GW Bush wasn't a 20th Century president.

Nor was he the worst president of the 21st Century. Both Clinton and the Messiah were worse than him.

Ronald Reagan.

Of course.

Reagan led the recovery from Carter's Disaster Area, whupped the Soviet Union without a major war, and showed the nation that socialism isn't necessary.

Naturally the Left hates him unreservedly.

You are right....I'm wrong. Didn't turn my brain on this morning.:doh

I've warned you before about how your eagerness to hate all things Bush clouds you from seeing things as clearly as you could. He could have asked you what the worst car in history was and your reply would have been "Bush!"

Move on. Besides, the worst president in the 20th century was James Buchanan (1857-1861).

Wilson, by a "green mile"!

FDR was the worst.

Wilson comes in a close second.

He didn't whup the USSR. They fell apart mostly from internal forces but also from draining themselves in Afghanistan.

Why has it become politicially correct to strip America of any credit these days?

1) WWII - As we have gotten further away from the event, we have to deal with more and more Europeans and some Americans who foster the idea that Russia won the war in Europe despite our very real German military dividing pressure crossing the whole of western Europe and from southern Europe which was nailing the coffin shut.

2) Cold War - As we have gottten further away from the event, we have had to deal with more and more Europeans and some Americans who foster the idea that the Soviet Union took itself out, despite the very real pressure from Reagan's military and satellite program spending that saw the Soviets struggle to keep up with.

3) And wasn't it quite recent that Pelosi instructed the world that Iran was truly responsible for our turn around in Iraq?

Why has it become so fashionable for people to seek out our enemies and rub their tummies? Why has it become so damn accepted that all credit for any American victory go to someone else; often an enemy? The fact is that the Soviet Union pretended to power and maintained that falsehood under the threat of nuclear arms for decades. And when it came down to the wire to compete financially with the "other" superpower, they fell on their faces. Reagan pushed the envelope, which is why European protest crowds appeared across Europe during the "Star Wars" period declaring that he was instigating World War III. It would appear that he instigated something else for which he is stripped credit for by some.

The USSR fell apart due mostly to internal corruption and the massive bureaucracy that made it impossible to get anything accomplished. Add to that the economical support it provided for - at one point - dozens of countries and the decision it made in the 1980s to allow for a more liberal economy and you'll see that 'America' never had any serious credit in the fall of the USSR to begin with. Why is it politically correct for you to claim political correctness when you don't agree with somebody not glamorizing and giving American policy a mythological status it doesn't deserve?

Why is it so common for people to blame "political correctness" for ideas they disagree with? Why is it so fashionable to paint those who disagree with you as somehow in league with our enemies?

There are a lot of reasons the Soviet Union fell apart, and Reagan's policies where a part of it, but not the largest part, and most likely it was going to happen no matter who was president at the time. While the US certainly deserves credit for winning the cold war, the Soviet Union is also largely responsible, due to their own problems. It's not "political correctness" to want to be accurate.

Buchanan was President in the 19th Century.

Coolidge was the worst in the 1900's. I'd have voted for Harding, but he was only in office for about a year and a half.

In my lifetime, probably Reagan, the "greed is good", "there is no such thing as society", type of world that he and Thatcher tried to create was not only unworkable, but also completely immoral.

If we are talking the entire 20th century surely Coolidge or Hoover would have to get the nod. The Great Depression was pretty untoppable.

Stagflation is not a good economy. Especially when your policies actively prolong it. Please review the artificial recession created by the Fed during his early years.

That was mostly a thing of the 70s. The 1980s, despite two nasty recessions, saw a fairly good US economy

True, but people tend to completely ignore how Reagan funneled huge amounts of money into a stagflationary economy at the same time as the fed was trying to reduce inflation. Reagan's policies made it significantly worse. If he had just let the Fed do it's job without monkeying around, the country would have gotten out of the recession much faster and with far more manageable inflation rates.

I find it incredibly hypocritical for people who bash FDR on his policies which they argue prolonged the depression yet praise Reagan despite his policies which prolonged stagflation. What the hell? Consistency anyone?

Odd how Harding is not one of the popular choices.

Just pointing that one thing out. Never said that Reagan was perfect

While I don't think to highly of the Harding Administration due to its rampant corruption, things went pretty well during his Presidency. When he entered office, America was in huge economic recession, and many Leftists were imprisoned during the Red Scare. Harding's hands off approach to the economy allowed for a quick recovery. He also helped end the scare, and even had prisoner Eugene Debs over to the White House. Now of course there were things like the Teapot Dome Scandal, but there have been worse 20th Century Presidents

I'll be back later, reletives are over.

Well, no one sane does it. But the Cult of Reagan acts like he never increased taxes, didn't increase debt/deficit and was an economic genius. The man was a reckless fiscal liberal.

I do know some people that love Reagan for his real fiscal policies. Those who bought 30 year munibonds paying 13%. :rofl

While Ronald Reagan violated his oath of office and subverted the U.S. Constitution in the Iran-Contra scandal it was another GOP president, Richard Nixon, who threatend the foundation our system and way of life with his conspiracies to use the U.S. government and its agencies to attack his political enemies and take revenge upon those who crossed him.
