I've warned you before about how your eagerness to hate all things Bush clouds you from seeing things as clearly as you could. He could have asked you what the worst car in history was and your reply would have been "Bush!"

Move on. Besides, the worst president in the 20th century was James Buchanan (1857-1861).

    FDR was the worst.

Wilson comes in a close second.

He didn't whup the USSR. They fell apart mostly from internal forces but also from draining themselves in Afghanistan.

Why has it become politicially correct to strip America of any credit these days?

    1) WWII - As we have gotten further away from the event, we have to deal with more and more Europeans and some Americans who foster the idea that Russia won the war in Europe despite our very real German military dividing pressure crossing the whole of western Europe and from southern Europe which was nailing the coffin shut.

    2) Cold War - As we have gottten further away from the event, we have had to deal with more and more Europeans and some Americans who foster the idea that the Soviet Union took itself out, despite the very real pressure from Reagan's military and satellite program spending that saw the Soviets struggle to keep up with.

    3) And wasn't it quite recent that Pelosi instructed the world that Iran was truly responsible for our turn around in Iraq?

Why has it become so fashionable for people to seek out our enemies and rub their tummies? Why has it become so damn accepted that all credit for any American victory go to someone else; often an enemy? The fact is that the Soviet Union pretended to power and maintained that falsehood under the threat of nuclear arms for decades. And when it came down to the wire to compete financially with the "other" superpower, they fell on their faces. Reagan pushed the envelope, which is why European protest crowds appeared across Europe during the "Star Wars" period declaring that he was instigating World War III. It would appear that he instigated something else for which he is stripped credit for by some.

The USSR fell apart due mostly to internal corruption and the massive bureaucracy that made it impossible to get anything accomplished. Add to that the economical support it provided for - at one point - dozens of countries and the decision it made in the 1980s to allow for a more liberal economy and you'll see that 'America' never had any serious credit in the fall of the USSR to begin with. Why is it politically correct for you to claim political correctness when you don't agree with somebody not glamorizing and giving American policy a mythological status it doesn't deserve?

Why is it so common for people to blame "political correctness" for ideas they disagree with? Why is it so fashionable to paint those who disagree with you as somehow in league with our enemies?

There are a lot of reasons the Soviet Union fell apart, and Reagan's policies where a part of it, but not the largest part, and most likely it was going to happen no matter who was president at the time. While the US certainly deserves credit for winning the cold war, the Soviet Union is also largely responsible, due to their own problems. It's not "political correctness" to want to be accurate.

Buchanan was President in the 19th Century.

Coolidge was the worst in the 1900's. I'd have voted for Harding, but he was only in office for about a year and a half.

    Re: Worst 20th Century President

In my lifetime, probably Reagan, the "greed is good", "there is no such thing as society", type of world that he and Thatcher tried to create was not only unworkable, but also completely immoral.

If we are talking the entire 20th century surely Coolidge or Hoover would have to get the nod. The Great Depression was pretty untoppable.
