If I would go utopian for a moment, I would rather have them tax certain consumer goods heavily. We all need food, shelter and things that give us hope like education and healthcare, no need to tax that heavily. On the other hand, hummers, fake tits, kaviar, whale meat, pda's, lawyers and other crap could be taxed 500%.
NOTE: Final judgment on helping the poor is made after we die. Jesus said that whatever we do "to the least of these", we have done unto him. So, if the rich are truly religious, and not religious hypocrite wannabes, then they had better heed those words, for the sake of their eternal souls. But it is not the function of the government to enforce morality, which includes dictating that people should give to the poor. It is only a commandment from a higher power that people have a right to believe or not believe, as they choose. It's all about free choice.
