Work site arrests of illegals fall dramaticallyArrests of illegal immigrant workers have dropped precipitously under President Obama, according to figures released Wednesday.

Criminal arrests, administrative arrests, indictments and convictions of illegal immigrants at work sites all fell by more than 50 percent from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009.

The figures show that Mr. Obama has made good on his pledge to shift enforcement away from going after illegal immigrant workers themselves - but at the expense of Americans' jobs, said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the Republican who compiled the numbers from the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE).

Mr. Smith, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said a period of economic turmoil is the wrong time to be cutting enforcement and letting illegal immigrants take jobs that Americans otherwise would hold.

"Those stolen jobs should be returned to out-of-work citizens and legal immigrants," he said. "The Obama administration should put citizens and legal immigrants first, especially when it comes to jobs."

One area where the Obama administration has made progress was in audits of businesses' I-9 forms, which jumped 300 percent. Those audits could produce fines in the future, but Republicans said that most businesses consider them a cost of doing business, not a deterrent.

The numbers were released just days after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the administration has made such advances on border security that Congress should now work on legalizing illegal immigrants.

"These statistics reflect a myopic, outdated and distorted view of effective enforcement," said Homeland Security spokesman Matt Chandler. "Just a week ago, we highlighted the more than 11,000 murderers, rapists and kidnappers identified in our jails by the Secure Communities program in the last year, nearly 2,000 of which have already been deported. ICE has prioritized its enforcement efforts by focusing on hardened criminals and employers who knowingly hire illegal workers and break the law."

Sending invaders back to their homeland is "myopic, outdated, and distorted"?

This is a spokeshole for the Homeland Security Department saying this?

He, and who ever hired him, should be fired before the sun goes down.

Won't happen, not with the traitor in the White House, but that's what should happen.

And here's another thing:

That led to high-profile raids and drew protests from immigrant rights groups who said families were being separated by the actions.

Criminals who get caught go to jail.

They're ...umm...how do I say this....oh, yeah.....they're "separated" from their families.

Why should criminals who break immigration laws be treated differently?

They've committed a crime, they need to do their time.

That their time is permanent expulsion from the United States is their problem, not ours.

Oh, and there's no law saying their families can't join them, you know.

Hell no its not "myopic, outdated, and distorted". If anything illegals should be sent to jail no more than 6 months the first offense before being sent home and those who employ illegals should face the same assets seizure and forfeiture laws that drug dealers, organized crime and other people who profit from or use money for illegal use. I bet most employers would be willing to make sure that those they hired were here legally if they knew their **** could be taken and treated no different than any other criminal.

Woa, your Home land Security folks sound like a bunch of lefty politically correct douche bags.

How about kick their arses over the boarder and back into where they belong?

Thats the real solution. PC people just HATE cutting the crap. Its what we have here in the UK, its been an obstacle to a proper functioning Democracy.

Of course it's not, only whiny liberal criminal-coddlers would claim it is, but that's exactly who said that, isn't it? These people can't come up with a logical reason we should allow criminal illegal aliens in the country so they pose ridiculous emotional arguments and turn on the crying. "Poor them!"

Poor them? How about all the poor Americans out of work? Nobody talks about them.

I would venture a guess that the reason arrests are down is because numbers are down, which may have something to do with the building industry falling dramatically. My opinion- send them back, and let them in when they can make it through legal channels.

This would be a much more interesting article if it actually provided numbers. Going from 200,000 to 100,000 is a lot more notable than going from 2,000 to 1,000.

Here's the closest thing:

According to the newly released figures, administrative arrests of violators of immigration laws fell 68 percent from 2008 to 2009, criminal arrests fell 60 percent, criminal indictments fell 58 percent and convictions fell 63 percent.

Fiscal 2008 ran from Oct. 1, 2007, through Sept. 30, 2008. Fiscal 2009 began Oct. 1, 2008, and ran through Sept. 30 of this year. Mr. Obama took office Jan. 20.

Furthermore, targeting the workers isn't a very efficient use of federal resources. If we target the people employing them, we will have a much larger impact on forcing the illegals to leave.

Only if it is at hard labor.... say, picking crops or some such.

Abolish NAFTA and people will stop coming.

Oh, right, you can't.

I agree with you to an extent, but often employers are unable to know whether or not the people they employ are illegal. Someone i know was an accountant for a hotel, and was almost positive that there were illegals on the payroll using fake social security numbers, but the government wasn't allowed to divulge the information that would allow them to know whether or not the employees were illegal or not.

I think your friend was either BSing you, or is very uninformed.

E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows an employer, using information reported on an employee's Form I-9, to determine the eligibility of that employee to work in the United States. For most employers, the use of E-Verify is voluntary and limited to determining the employment eligibility of new hires only.

There is no charge to employers to use E-Verify.

Why, it didn't stop 'em before NAFTA. We need to go after the employers and make sure anyone who tries to come across illegally goes to the very back of the waiting list. You get caught here illegally three times, you will *NEVER* be allowed to file for citizenship.

People that come into the country illegally should be deported immediately.

It's not that hard to get here legally (although that process should be changed some too.)

Scarecrow, exactly how are these immigrants hurting you ?
