–noun, plural -men. 1. Usually Offensive. a Chinese or a person of Chinese descent.
2. (lowercase) a person who imports or sells china.
3. (often lowercase) Political Slang. a person regarded as one's benefactor, sponsor, or protector: to see one's chinaman about a favor.

It is "usually" offensive. Not always, but Usually... Chinaman is not Nigger or Slope or Chink or Spick or Spook or Coon or Cracker or anywere near what most people would consider racist. I am not defending the term, just your rage over it might be a tad bit misplaced. Just think about it...

If you were a Chinese American your perspective would be different than it is. Use of the epithet "Chinaman" resonates with Chinese Americans because it connotes inferiority and discrimination. On Asian American forums use of this epithet is grounds for an immediate and summary ban.

Imo DP is composed primarily of White Americans, some of whom are sometimes willing to throw around racist terms. The Mods on DP are clearly insensitive to racism against Asian Americans. The Mods are either clueless or simply don't care about the expression of racism against Asian Americans. The only Americans who don't understand the use of the epithet "Chinaman" to be negative are those who are ignorant.

Earthworm made his racist comment on November 24, 2009. In the eight days since he posted his racist comment the Mods have done nothing. Very unprofessional.

Please don't respond. Farewell.

OMG, what's with all this racist BS be thrown about. You may as well say Englishman is racist as well. Too much PC BS.

There is nothing wrong with the word "chinaman". Chinese people here use the word "chinaman" too.

You don't know if Earthworm received an infraction or not, that is the whole point since that decision is made in provate and then he is told in provate, you have no way of knowing if he was infracted or not, unless he decides to tell you that is...

Bottom line though, people (you included) need to stop being so sensitive. Being hurt by a term only feeds the racists.
Seriously... think about it.

"Chinaman" is racist? How they heck could that be considered racist in any sense of the form? They're from China, they're a man... It might be considered a bit sexist if applied to a Chinese woman but other than that????

I think that anyone that thinks its racist is a weeeeeeee bit thin skinned.

First off, the censorship and oppression of the people of China is staggering. Saying it's quite free shows you know nothing of the issue. Or that you have no idea what "free" means.

Secondly, they use their state banks and subsidies to affect our currency and the valuation of theirs. They do it on purpose, fine but I have no problem then with a floating tariff to offset their monkeying.

That is ridiculous, but typical American to blame American problems on others.

  1. [The abductors] are inhuman. Their car drove up to that place [where I was] and two people dragged me by the hair and put me into the car. My two hands were tied up and I couldn't move. Then [after arriving back in Jiangsu] they put me inside a room where there were two women who stripped me of my clothes... [and] beat my head [and] used their feet to stomp my body

The guard fled after the rape, witnesses said. About 50 detainees, including the student, broke through the wooden door and ran away Tuesday morning (August 4, 2009), taking two bloody sheets with them as evidence of the assault. About 10 (of the detainees) went to the local police station to report the rape, but say they were ignored.

I asked why they were detaining me, and as a group [the guards] came in and punched and kicked me and said they wanted to kill me. I loudly cried for help and they stopped, but from then on, I didn't dare [risk another beating

Amnesty International has documented widespread human rights violations in China. An estimated 500,000 people are currently enduring punitive detention without charge or trial, and millions are unable to access the legal system to seek redress for their grievances. Harassment, surveillance, house arrest, and imprisonment of human rights defenders are on the rise, and censorship of the Internet and other media has grown. Repression of minority groups, including Tibetans, Uighurs and Mongolians, and of Falun Gong practitioners and Christians who practice their religion outside state-sanctioned churches continues. While the recent reinstatement of Supreme People's Court review of death penalty cases may result in lower numbers of executions, China remains the leading executioner in the world.

Provide evidence or leave this debate. China is on the list of every major Human Rights Violations Group in the world.

There are thousands of equal stories in the US, just it isnt done by the government, but rather by the "free people" against each other. Usually by the victims of freedom, the tens of millions of poor Americans.

You complain about Chinese justice system, but dont consider the reality that China is still relatively poor per person, and that they have less prisoners than the US. Also US prisoners are sentanced to spend their whole life in jail. A lot of the time people get absurd sentences like 20 years in prison for stealing a car or something like that, or stealing money. In the US people can get 10 years in prison for not filling out a paper(tax). Or many more years than that for filling it our wrong. If thats not unjust a justice system just because its free, then certainly your view of the world is massivly skewed because of your views of "free".

PS. China is a mostly secular country that doesnt look nice on extremism, so yes, religious groups may not be treated freely. But so what, there are many stupid laws in all regions of the world.

Things blew up there due to the stupid government actions. China's government is very capable of blowing the whole things up

Europe, the US and the rest of the world would be back to the stonage without Japan. The world economy and high tech industries cannot work without the Japanese contribution.

That is ridiculous, but typical American to blame American problems on others.

What's ridiculous is your ignorance of global economic dynamics and the actions of China's state run banks. But typical European, running their mouths with no information or knowledge of the subject.

But that's not really typical European, most of the one's I know are smart. That's just you.

Maybe you should wrap the US flag around your prick in oil and play the national anthem while you scream that everyone else is s***.

Strange words coming from an American-hating flagburner.

The U.S. sold out a long time ago. The USSR was the main concern. Once capitalism won, anyone who endorsed it became a partner. China is communist in sociopolitical policy, but economically it's as capitalist as they come. That means the U.S. is their devoted ally.

All this talk about how our governments don't support Chinese oppression is just a bunch of crappy platitudes. Our governments don't intrinsically care about human rights when it comes down to it. In the current arrangement, money talks louder than humanity. China serves our capitalism, so their people can rot for all we care.
Is that why Chinese work for a dollar a day?

Hmm, American laws prevent children being used in sweatshops. How's China in that regard? Also the US doesn't forcefully harvest organs from its prisoners. Hows China in that regard?

American's may have more prisoners but that's probably because we hold people to a higher standard. Also the US doesn't execute it's prisoners near as much as China.

Your examples are for the most part wrong.

The only time a person goes to jail for not filling out a tax paper is when they purposely don't pay their taxes. And even then they are given a chance to pay them long before any sort of jail sentence. For the ones that still refuse to pay the IRS normally just takes money directly out of their checks through a court order. If that still don't work then they get sent to jail.

No one goes to jail for making a mistake on a tax form. Wherever you read that needs to check their facts.

The amount of time that a person goes to jail for stealing a car varies by state. But from what I can tell the max amount that a person can be sentenced is 7 years. Judges often give far more leniant sentences for first time offenders. Normally around 1-2 years, again depending on the states minimum sentence allowed laws.

Maybe you should refrain from attacking the whole of a country. I didn't attack everyone, you did. I merely said that you should know what you're talking about before you try to run your mouth. The Chinese use their banks and subsidies thereof to influence American currency. Which whatever, can't stop that. My point was that it's fine for us to have a floating tariff which takes account for that. You're the one who came out of the doors swinging about "typical Americans", not me. So before you throw stones, maybe you should watch out for your own glass house.

The question is would china still consider itself as the central kingdom and consider us all its sub-states in the future.

thanks to you and Ikari for responding to him, I am finding that, as with many other issues, Maximus is simply too wrapped up in his hatred of America zeal and completely irrational, so I won't bother responding to him here.

Warren Buffett knows exactly what's going down in China. As for his own work, he can't affect the system on the level that China can. Additionally, he's an individual so if the government wants to make it even they can tax him or restrict him (via law) if they want. You can't do that to China since they are a sovereign country. You can, however, install a floating tariff to account for it.

I like the idea of a floating tarriff..... in the future. The world economy is far to fragile for us to risk a trade war (regardless the merit) with China. The Chinese use the trade imbalance to purchase assets in/from the US. A severe drop in this aspect could have dire consequences.

In fact, it would. Though it would devastate China more than the US. We could rebuild infrastructure for production. Though before that happens, yes we would suffer too.

Not really (bold).

Picking up the slack for cheaply assembled industrial goods only regresses the economy. We benefit twofold: via cheap prices and not having to forgo more "profitable" endeavors.
