For years, Gadiel's hometown of Kent, Conn., has wanted to honor the young man with a memorial plaque next to its town hall. But the tribute has hit a snag because James' father wants to include the phrase, "Murdered by Muslim terrorists," under his son's name.

What do you think? The town wants to put a memorial plaque next to its town hall but the father wants the phrase 'Murdered by Muslim Terrorists' put on the plaque.
For Peter Gadiel, it is a central fact of the Sept. 11 attacks that is often left out.

"It isn't just overlooked, it's suppressed," Gadiel said. "It's simply wrong to imply that people just died. The buildings didn't just collapse, they didn't just fall down — they were attacked by people with a specific identity, a specific purpose."

The town thinks it's just too controversial to put those words.
Town officials call the phrase too controversial for a small town memorial, and they recently voted against erecting the plaque if Gadiel insists on the language.

Free speech out the window?

If it's on government property in public view, that just seems gratuitous and inflammatory. I empathize with the father, but that doesn't mean the city should put something so obnoxious on a memorial plaque. What's wrong with a plaque that just memorializes him as a victim of 9/11? Is the father worried that people will forget what happened?

is it customary for a memorial plaque to mention the manner in which one died, other than 'In the line of duty'?

I don't see what purpose it would serve. Why does he need to make that distinction?

I don't think anyone would want to be remembered as "Murdered by Muslim Terrorists."

He's just trying to be political and inflammatory. It's sad that he is using his son's memory to try and accomplish that.

If it's public property then it's the town's decision. Personally I have no problem with that. It's true so where's the controversy??

It may be true, but it's still insulting. It's like calling a ho, a ho. You know?

Oh, I don't know..
Even here in Libtardistan we have roadside signs that say, " Im memory of John XXXXX, please don't drink & drive".......
That points out who was responsible, maybe in a slightly roundabout way, but murderers just the same....
Same rule should apply....;)

I wonder how may people who believe the words have no place on city property due to perceived controversy feel the same way about anti-american "artwork"(I use that term "artwork" loosely) being displayed on city property?

I see nothing controversial with the words. However it would be like putting my child was killed by a child rapist or my son was killed by a drunk driver or my dad died of a heart attack on a grave stone. I know when I die I do not want my loved ones looking on my tombstone seeing how I died.

That's considerably less offensive than if the sign had read "Murdered by an alcoholic" or something like that. Besides, most of those road signs were put up by the family themselves, not the government.

I don't think it should as it will send the wrong message. It should be to honor the memory of the departed, not trash the criminals who did it.

Just seems to be more of a revenge move than one of honoring the fallen.

I think it would dishonor the memory and the person who built such a thing.

I don't see how can this be offensive to Muslims that are not terrorists.

Yeah sure, he could have said murdered by terrorists, but that would be a generalization.

I see nothing wrong with it. In fact it sounds like a good idea. A memorial is not just about remembering the fallen. It's also about remembering how they fell. After all the they don't have the World War II Memorial named "World War II Memorial" for nothing.

Personally I think the saying really dishonors the dead by politicizing it with anger.
While the man is free to put whatever he wants on a private cemetary headstone....it doesn't belong in the public square.

Again...why would this man want to dishonor his son with this?

Not much precedent, actually, based on the following inscriptions:

The only ones who should be inflamed by such an inscription are Muslim terrorists.

That's not true. You know perfectly well that it is obnoxious. I am neither Muslim nor a terrorist, and *I* would be offended by it. Why does the city need to specifically point out the murderer? What purpose does that serve? Everyone knows what happened on 9/11.

Is a memorial - especially a PUBLIC memorial - really the place for this ****?

Free speech out the window?
I've often wondered why all nations do not have "free speech".
I am learning why.
Good ,respectful taste is of paramount importance on a memorial. Describing the cause of death, even a murder is simply not in good taste... not on a memorial..
Many do not seem to possess this quality...
Few seem to have any notion of what "free speech" really is.

And yes it is.
