The CIA is that part of the government that "deals with" our enemies over outside the country.

Other: promoting US interests.

you could ask them yourself, and they could tell you, but then they'd have to...well, you know the rest. ;)

Hey, other, get back into the poll options.

It depends on what you mean. It could certainly use being more up-to-date and effective.

other, of course.

Like any organization made up of fallable human beings, they are capable of good or bad, but I tend toward giving them the benefit of the doubt as their primary mission is to promote US interests and safety abroad.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by up-to-date Dav?

Are American foreign interests typically a good thing or a bad thing... that's what I'm getting at.

Well my dad works for the CIA and according to him, they're basically stuck in the 1950s. Their job is to gather information and you think they'd want to utilize the internet, with all its ripe information on it, to do that, but they haven't gotten around to it yet. There are newer ways of gathering intelligence that they haven't bothered to explore. Keep in mind this is all just from word of mouth though, I don't know much about the subject myself.

The next wave of CIA employees (our generation) will more than likely be capable of "modernizing".

It'll catch up. There were myths about the CIA from the Cold War as to it's capability, but must of it was probably rumors spread to impress the KGB.

The CIA is far too complex of an organization for a one-word binary choice.

Dav, the CIA tried to recruit me straight out of high school. I talked with a CIA field agent, he was the one waiting for me. He told me they'd trained me to become the best secret agent anyone could ever imagine. And a lot of it involved using computers. So I am pretty sure the CIA is pretty well advanced in computer talk, etc.

And now since this is the internet, can anybody tell me which part is true and which isn't?

Can I just call shenanigans and leave it at that?

Niiiiice.

Well if we're already at secret sharing, I'm the queen of England.

Well, I must say I've always admired your stoicism and amiable handwave, madam.
That's my double you're talking about.
I'm just sitting in the palace drinking my cup of tea with milk all day long, and three times a day sir Rupert takes me out on walks in the royal gardens and I do my necessities.

Currently bad. I understand the base premise of the CIA, I can agree that we have a legitimate cause for foreign intelligence gathering. But the CIA does a bit more than that, and those parts are bad. I wouldn't get rid of the CIA, but I would restrict it to intelligence. And I would get rid of the NSA.

It is far more likely that the NSA would get rid of you, no offense meant. :2razz:

I mean, that's a fairly true statement. I find the NSA to be extremely shady and any organization which hires that many PhD mathematicians outside of academia has to be up to something shady. It would be best to get rid of it and not replace it with anything.

I thought that it was an obvious and based fact by now that the entire governmental intelligence agencies were 'shady'.

Is the CIA Good or Bad?

Depends on who is their client. (President)

(Kinda like asking if a Smith & Wesson 9mm automatic is good or bad.......Depends on the purpose to which it's put)

I think that there needs to be clear & strongly enforced restrictions on any President to not use the CIA in violation of any laws or treaties & carrying strong personal (criminal) repercussions if deliberately misused.
Like my gun analogy, the CIA can be used for good, defensive purposes...but it can & has been used by some Presidents for dark, un-American & evil purposes as well.
Like any weapon, I can foresee being tempted to use it in violation of law...& sometimes that may even be justified....BUT...No President should ever feel that he/she can use it with no legal responsibility/repercussions after the fact. (like any criminal defendant, a former President can present mitigating evidence at trial)
