I do not believe there is any rational reason as to why prostitution is illegal. I think we can regulate the industry better, they can form a union for wages and such (no more pimp), the health standards can be enforced and such. Plus there's the tax revenue and such. Keeping prostitution illegal is stupid IMO.

Nice way to foster debate. Carry on yesmen.

    Let me explain.

I don't think the act should necessarily be illegal. IE the act of exchanging goods (cash) for service (well...um "service"). I don't mind certain. I don't mind a bit of regulation in regards to where said things can be advertised or offered.

By legitimized however is I mean I don't think it should be an out there in your face lets promote it as a possible path of employement type of thing. Its ultimately still an adult only entertainment venue. I wouldn't want to see it legalized and then in some way glamorized or pushed as a mainstream thing. Not saying pass legislation against such, but I would hope (and think) it'll be treated like sex shops, strip clubs, etc in regards to general community acceptance and forms of advertising/pervasiveness in the culture than something more "legitimate".
On one hand I agree on the other I don't.

I agree because I'm a father. I agree also because I don't always try to offend other peoples sensibilities.

I don't agree because I think that hiding things from kids just hurts the kids in the long run, and in today's day and age it's damn near impossible for children to not know about sex by 8-10 years old. Heck at 6-7 years old I was playing truth or dare and seeing girl's bodies. Didn't know what the heck I was doing...just knew that others liked me for it. (that whole acceptance thing) So why not just start teach them about sex when they start asking about it? Which is surprisingly young. :P I think that doing so would make them more responsible about it and not make it so taboo...and we all know how teenagers react to things that are taboo.....

    For example:

If legal then a "john" would be stupid to beat up his "hoe" as the reason that they do so now is because prostitution is illegal...so the "hoe" won't go to the police for fear of being arrested herself.

Human smuggling is mainly used by criminals because of rich guy's "tastes". IE 10 year old girls or "virgin" chinese etc etc. So doubt that would stop. But then again human smuggling is a whole nother catagory in itself.

STD's could be made to be checked for regularly if someone is in this field of work. IF made legal. As it stands there is more of a chance of contracting an std from a prostitute because they don't have regular check-ups.
The hookers in Amsterdam and the Netherlands are not required to get an STD check. Trust me on that. And I have had sex with prostitutes in Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria, Czech Republic. And I have always used a condom. And you know what? No STD. Not once. And none of the girls are made to take and STD test. Except for in Austria, I think? Austria was expensive. Actually now I remember in Austria the hookers are requiered to take an HIV test every month. When you have sex with a prostitute you have to use your head. Look at her and look closely. Talk with her somewhat to get to know her-that'll help for a lower price-and you'll know what type of girl you are having sex with. Remember that the majority of girls are like you. They don't want to get a disease. If a girl offers bareback bj's don't take it. I remember in Germany that was always a problem. The hookers said they didn't like the taste of latex in their mouths. AAnd if she is offering you bareback sex don't take it it means she probably has something nasty.

But what I'm trying to say is that yes it should be legal and condoms should be readily available. The condoms will prevent the majority of the disease transmission. Like roughly 99.97% of the time the condom will protect you from viral and bacteria disease. But everynow and then a bacteria might sneak in. And you'll get something that can be easily treated with antibiotics.
And the first time I had sex with a "normal" girl I ended up getting chlamydia.
So really this stigma that hookers are invested with disease is a lie. Maybe streetwalkers yes, but turn it into something like that of where its legal. And stds won't be so common.

    Should prostitution remain illegal?

Is this a trick question? I should never be charged, on the other hand if the ladies want to tip me, well thats a different story

Seriously, I think it is down right silly for it to remain illegal. Its the only thing I can think of right off that is legal if free but illegal if not.

I wasn't meaning to imply that std's was a serious outbreak among prostitutes. However the risk is still higher than normal.

I'm not saying don't talk to your kids about sex. Absolutely not. (Though I do think that should be a parent thing, not a school thing, save for in the most basic biological and safety ways).

I'm just saying don't try and glamorize it. Becoming a prostitute shouldn't be something you urge or suggest or glamerize to your kids as a career path. It shouldn't be made out to be an acceptable and reasonable goal to grow up and become a prostitute. When talking about the birds and the bee's suggesting you can possibly just save up your allowance to buy a hooker for your first time shouldn't be a standard alternative.

I'm not saying don't make them aware of things, I was meaning more that we as a society should legalize it but in doing so we can't allow it to continue down the slippery slope from legalization to legitimization
