Alright. So this one is going to be a bit more political and slightly different in nature than the other one (and hopefully keeps anyone from jumping in the other one and derailing it to politics).

Would you agree with the government mandating that flu shots MUST be taken or, if you don't, you get fined some nominal amount.

Generally, no. At least if we're talking about routine, seasonal flu (or even swine flu), and we're talking about the public as a whole. For people with a high probability of infecting lots of others...I guess it would depend on the circumstances.

Not until it's proven to be an epidemic.

Just say no to government mandates. Not for something as simple as the flu, anyway. If it was some extremely deadly pandemic virus, then I can see reasons to mandate vaccines. However, not for the flu.

Never for something like the flu. For other vaccines, I think that kids should have to have them but adults can make their own decisions.

Mandated No
Made available (free) or those who want them.... yes

I believe that "he who trades liberty for flu shots deserves swine flu"! Great choice.

Hmm, as long as you get the vaccine yourself, then you stand virtually no chance to get the disease right? Well then, be responsible and get yourself vaccinated. We don't need the government protecting us from something that we can prevent ourselves.

No vote, of course; but one question - have you ever suffered from the flu ?

And this is probably more right-wing trash - there will never be mandated flu shots..

As long as this Prez is in office I say never say never. Come to that i would have said never say never to the previous three of them.

That being said I intend to get a flu shot when i can. I've had the flu before i don't want a repeat experience.

The only time I'd accept a government mandated shot is if we were subject to biological warfare and faced with a 99% deadly, engineered strain of something. Until then, I'd take the fine.

I'm not universally against vaccinations. Many of the traditional vaccinations like tetanus-diptheria, polio, and TB have had great success and the modern risk to having them is low. Something like the flu vaccine is so industry-driven and, in my view, manufactured without sufficient medical trials; it has reached such levels that industry pressure to sell the flu vaccines is overriding rational policy making. I mean, who wants to get Guillain-Barré syndrome just from a desire to be protected from the flu?

I'll accept the fine.

They're not free, though. Nothing is. Someone, somewhere, is picking up the tab. I assume you?

Or is Obama using his "stash"?

I am going to say no, except in the case of the health care workers, hell maybe even school kids, I wouldn't have a problem with that being added to the list of mandatory vaccinations.

No government will ever tell me that I have to give my kid a vaccination. I'll pack up my things and leave town that same day.

Uh, they do already. buh-bye

Your odds of dying from the flu (even if you have a healthy immune system and no other aggravating conditions) are much higher than your odds of contracting GBS from the vaccine, let alone dying from it.

uh, no..they don't. Not where I live.

If you live in the United States, and send your kids to school, then they do. All states have mandatory vaccination laws. They all have medical exemptions, and some have religious or philosophical exemptions, but unless you qualify for, or declare an exemption, your kid must be vaccinated to attend school.

I don't cater to statistics when it comes to my personal health.

Well you should. It makes no sense to worry about the scary but low-risk headlines in the media, instead of the things that are somewhat likely to harm you. It's the irrational equivalent of driving instead of flying across country, because you're worried about terrorism (but not auto crashes).

I agree, there is no need to worry. I'm not going to die if I get the flu, nor am I going to die if I get H1N1. I'm a healthy person. 7% of people who get H1N1 die. That's comparable to the normal flu. Why should I be panicked?

The yearly flu vaccine is determined by a team of immunologists who work for the UN or the CDC. They pick a few strains that are likely to surface that year based on initial data. Other than that, there is no rhyme or reason. You could get the shot and still get the flu... in fact, in a related article I posted to DP, there is research surfacing which shows that people who get the flu vaccine are at least two times more susceptible to flu viruses.

So yeah, it is largely a waste of time, and I'd rather not waste my time by having a chemical solution injected into my body that was formulated only a couple of months ago, that does who knows what.

Which is a study that can lead to bad conclusions because it is the people who are in fact more susceptible to the flu that typically get the flu shot. It should come as no surprise that these people would get the flu more often.
