let me give you a few examples of a situation where you can either assume the person is saying the truth or that he is lying:

example 1: a guy approaches a girl in the bar, the girl asks him what college did he attend and what he does for a living. he replies that he graduated from Harvard and is a lawyer. do you assume he is saying the truth or do you assume he is lying ?

example 2: a bunch of guys are hanging out with a bunch of girls then one girl asks one guy in front of everybody else - how big is your dick ? the guy answers 8 inches. do you assume he is exaggerating or do you assume that he read the number off a ruler ?

example 3: a politician who has seven houses says that he deeply cares about the needs of an average worker. do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

example 4: a girl starts crying telling her boyfriend " you never want to spend time with me, you don't care about me " and the guy replies " i am sorry i had so much work i didn't have any time to see you, i love you ". do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

don't answer to any particular example just in general in cases such as the ones i describe ...

Very interesting poll.

The third option makes the most sense to me. When people tell me things I tell myself "ok this is what they have told me, I don't know if it is true or false yet."

I have the predetermined notion that what someone tells me is mostly true, but not always the complete truth. Its hard to explain, but anyway my point is that the third option is closest to what I believe.

Pretty much the way it goes for me as well. I probably lean just a little more on the untrusting side tho.

are you a trusting person ?

Depends on a number of factors.

If it's said online on a forum then I will take them at their word if it is something personal. Until they contradict themselves. Then I won't ever believe anything they say unless it is verifiable. If it is something that is verifiable I will verify it before believing it.

If it is in person and they are strangers then I will rely on two things. My gut feeling and their body language. If it is someone that I know then it will depend on what I know of their history.

If I were the girl I'd ask him what malum in se means.

He's being modest in his bragging. Most men claim 9.

example 3: a politician who has seven houses says that he deeply cares about the needs of an average worker. do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

Depends. If it's one of the guys who owns Wal-Mart. Negatory.

example 4: a girl starts crying telling her boyfriend " you never want to spend time with me, you don't care about me " and the guy replies " i am sorry i had so much work i didn't have any time to see you, i love you ". do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

Probably. I've had my wife make the same complaint and we both work from home. I mean how much more time can we possibly spend together? Women are never happy. I mean I shave my balls and she still....... wait TMI.....hehehe.

Probably lying to avoid embarrassment

example 3: a politician who has seven houses says that he deeply cares about the needs of an average worker. do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

Any politician who says they care about the average worker is lying. Especially if he supports illegal immigration or work visas when unemployment is high which screws the wages of workers and or if he supports outsourcing. Usually when a politician says they support average workers it means they just want their votes and are just telling the voters what they want to hear.
example 4: a girl starts crying telling her boyfriend " you never want to spend time with me, you don't care about me " and the guy replies " i am sorry i had so much work i didn't have any time to see you, i love you ". do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

Maybe. He could be telling the truth and the girl could simply be a selfish hoe that doesn't appreciate the hard work her boyfriend/husband does.

How do you use these questions as examples and expect people not to answer? If the questions were-
1.Bum on the street corners holds a sign literally asking for money so he can buy beer.

2.Bob says the whitehouse in Washington D.C.

3.Vehicle will not start and the driver says he is out of gas.

Obviously most people would say these individuals were being truthful.

...
example 2: a bunch of guys are hanging out with a bunch of girls then one girl asks one guy in front of everybody else - how big is your dick ? the guy answers 8 inches. do you assume he is exaggerating or do you assume that he read the number off a ruler ?

...
If a guy answered that question it would not matter whether he was lying or not. If he is stupid enough to answer, IMO, he is just too damned stupid to live. ;)

.

Option three because no better option exists.

example 1: a guy approaches a girl in the bar, the girl asks him what college did he attend and what he does for a living. he replies that he graduated from Harvard and is a lawyer. do you assume he is saying the truth or do you assume he is lying ?
There would be other clues available in this instance such as; dress, mannerisms, etc...
More questioning would ensue.

example 2: a bunch of guys are hanging out with a bunch of girls then one girl asks one guy in front of everybody else - how big is your dick ? the guy answers 8 inches. do you assume he is exaggerating or do you assume that he read the number off a ruler ?
He's being modest in his bragging. Most men claim 9.
I would assume they are both telling the truth.
Only because they measured starting at the 12" mark.

example 3: a politician who has seven houses says that he deeply cares about the needs of an average worker. do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?
Truthful.
Because what one considers "deeply caring" may not be what another one does, nor does in mean that it takes priority over other areas of concern.

example 4: a girl starts crying telling her boyfriend " you never want to spend time with me, you don't care about me " and the guy replies " i am sorry i had so much work i didn't have any time to see you, i love you ". do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?
I would probably assume he is telling the truth, but how he presents his response may be an indication. It also depends on other circumstances in the relationship.
But if I was the guy, I would probably assume that something else was bothering her.

If a guy said he was from harvard I am mildly confident that I would have the verbal skills to ask questions and discern for myself whether it is true. Also. Who the hell lies that they're from harvard unless your 'in cancun' where you could get away with a lie for a one night stand.

Who the hell lies about the size of their dick, knowing if they had the remotest chance of getting in bed with one of these girls why would they lie about it? I've read the size of my dick off a ruler btw it was years ago, something you gotta do.:rofl. And most people I know are mature enough not to lie about the size of their dongs.

really being able to tell whether a person is lying or not has to do with alot of contextual factors that cant really be had in short anecdotal statement.

So I cant really tell you if I would trust them or not. But I have to say most people I run into I assume never have to make outright lies like that.

Really couldn't say. I'd have to see and hear the person speaking in order to determine if I'd believe what they were saying. Body language, tone, inflection, eye movements are HUGE factors.

Lying....he just wants to get down her pants, and goes with the ole stigma, that woman are just with men for their money.

Telling the truth, if he were lying he'd say something like 9 or 10.

example 3: a politician who has seven houses says that he deeply cares about the needs of an average worker. do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

Liar - all politicians lie.

example 4: a girl starts crying telling her boyfriend " you never want to spend time with me, you don't care about me " and the guy replies " i am sorry i had so much work i didn't have any time to see you, i love you ". do you assume he is lying or saying the truth ?

4. Liar - doesn't take much to pick up the phone.

in the real world, nope

I picked the truth, but it really does depend. Most of the time, unless I have evidence or intuition that a person is lying, I will trust them to be telling me the truth. Most people can get away with telling me a lie, as long as it is believable and they haven't lied to me before about something similar.

i used to believe everybody but everybody was lying to me.

at the same time i was always telling the truth but nobody would ever believe me.

finally i am catching up. i am still telling the truth but at least i don't trust anybody any more.

the average relationship lasts 2 weeks. this is when all the one night stands and all the 50 year relationships are averaged. most girls will not find out much about you in 2 weeks so you can tell them whatever you want.

even worse - if the girl does find out that everything you told her was a lie she is not going to leave you just because of that. she will stay with you if she likes you.

there is really not much point in saying the truth and and people who are afraid to lie are usually afraid to come up to a girl in the bar too. that's why girls never believe anything you say because statistically everything they hear is a lie.

thats why you need to have a Bimmer. girls are really excited to see it! they think i will spend money on them - HAHAHAHAHAHA ! ! !

i would rather pay a prostitute :)

i used to trust a person unless he has lied to me before.

now i distrust people unless i have known them for many years and they have NEVER lied to me.

i find it funny that people EXPECT me to believe them when they tell me something.

WHY ?

it all ties into the way the government exercises its mind control over the population. they are trying to create a society where all lies are trusted - and their success is quite remarkable.

little kids are taught in school that they " need to learn how to trust others " ...

what a load of bull !

Depends where we are. If it's here in DC, I'd probably believe him. If I was back home in Dayton, Ohio, I'd be less likely to do so.

He's almost certainly lying.

I would believe him. Most people get into politics for honorable reasons. I don't see any conflict between being wealthy and caring about those who aren't.

Ehh...depends on their relationship.

I answered in the context of Canada... so I answered that I generally assume that people are telling the truth. I've noticed, for me, that if I have faith in the honesty of others, then I'll tend to attract honest people into my life. The liars then stand out like a sore thumb. Different countries have a different level of common trust. In Asia I would trust no one.
