Should we remove race and gender identifying questions from all forms & applications?

I believe we should with the exception of gender in gender specific jobs. Why should the government require a person to identify themselves by race or gender when applying for jobs, loans, census, ect? Is this not keeping the idea that we should be identified by such things in our society and also keeping the way society views people differently based on such things?

It should be irrelevant when applying for anything. A person should base their decision on merits alone and race/gender should not be a factor.

I don't think it would do anything for gender since most names are usually male names or female names.

You're probably right. It is just one of those things that I think would look more fair. I think that is important.

Re: Should we remove race and gender identifying questions from all forms & applicati

I strongly disagree on this one. Although this is about impossible to enforce, I don't think it should be legal to not hire someone just because of their race. Even in the private sector. Like I said, this is unenforceable (unless, someone has about 100 employees in an area where the population is diverse, and all are white, in which case it would be clear enough to enforce) but it should be at least the law of the United States that a business owner cannot discriminate based on race.

Then you must not agree with personal freedom or private property? If a person cannot choose who they want to work for them in a private business, it is no longer "private."

It has nothing to do with being enforceable, it has to do with what is yours and not the governments.

Telling a private business who they can/cannot hire based on color rather than qualifications, or the private owners wants and/or need is in itself discriminatory.

It sounds like you would also think affirmative action is a good idea?

Do you understand the difference between political debate and partisan trolling?
I do.

In general, someone is debating when they agree. They are trolling when they disagree effectively.

Re: Should we remove race and gender identifying questions from all forms & applicati

No. I think knowing the sex or race of who you want to hire is your right as a business owner.

In fact if the business is private they should be able to hire whomever, for whatever reasons they like.

PS This does not mean it is necessary in all situations. I am only referring to employment in the private sector. Government jobs and public situations: the answer would be yes.

Private businesses are normally small...like a family restaurant. IE they only hire family. In which case no application is needed. Any business that hires outside the family is no longer private.

At least this is my understanding.

Yes, for government jobs it should be removed.

As for private companies, let them discriminate all they want if they think that's good for business. I can think of one or two gender specific jobs, but I can't for the life of me come up with a race specific job.

The only thing I could come up with were actors/actresses. Some roles may be better suited for one race or another. Probably didnt have alot of black vikings or white africans.

Abercrombie & Fitch. Hahaha. Couldn't resist. My bad.

Re: Should we remove race and gender identifying questions from all forms & applicati

I think they should be. And I think they could take care of some other identifying info by having a person from HR code all of the incoming applications and do the background checks that would have no say in who gets called in for an interview and/or hired. Then the info that might identify a person's race or gender could be hidden in the file given to the person responsible for actually hiring. Obviously, if an interview is required and the interviewer is biased, then there really isn't a good way around it. This could help some people actually get into an interview.

I was thinking more of health. There are treatments that work on some races better than others, and diseases affect certain races more than others. I would really want for there to be race and gender questions on health forms.

Re: Should we remove race and gender identifying questions from all forms & applicati

Those questions are always voluntary anyway and for the purposes of census. I don't give a **** if they're there or not.

Nope, I am strongly opposed to affirmative action. I think it is pointless, and totally unfair. I just think that discrimination should not be allowed, even in private enterprise. It just seems right to me... Why a person would want to discriminate based on race is beyond me anyway.

It should not be my decision whether or not to discriminate based on race in the job market. I don't understand why someone would think that should be legal. Can you explain that?

Let me just say I'm as white as they come. These things wouldn't benefit me at all. But I do not believe in discrimination based on the amount of melanin that happens to be present in your skin.
