I don't think it would do anything for gender since most names are usually male names or female names.

I believe we should with the exception of gender in gender specific jobs. Why should the government require a person to identify themselves by race or gender when applying for jobs, loans, census, ect? Is this not keeping the idea that we should be identified by such things in our society and also keeping the way society views people differently based on such things?
It should be irrelevant when applying for anything. A person should base their decision on merits alone and race/gender should not be a factor.
