Re: Should Hand Sanitizer be banned from public schools?

I've never researched hand sanitizer so I don't even know if it works that well. Alcohol kills germs but I don't know the length of exposure required for it to kill bacteria. I don't use hand sanitizer because my hands don't feel clean afterwards. If you use a regular soap it will bind to the germs (including viruses, which hand sanitizers don't kill) and wash them away. How lazy are we as a society that we can't find a sink with some soap?

And then you have industry sponsored research being posted in the news, like in a recent article in Canada where it claimed 'experts say' that washing your hands is not as good of a preventative measure against the flu as we thought... vaccines provide better protection.

I am so tired of the greed and political pissing contests. Just wash your damn hands with soap and that's good enough.

Well, I'm a nursing student, and the advice we've been given is to use the alcohol wash when going between patients and different environments, but if there's noticable contamination of the hands (dirt, bodily fluids etc.) to use only soap and water. I'm not sure why, but that's the UK healthcare perspective.

I kinda like sneaking up on the germs from the inside; a glass of vino, with a good meal seems to do the job.
The haggardness of poverty is everywhere seen contrasted with the sleekness of wealth, the exhorted labor of some compensating for the idleness of others, wretched hovels by the side of stately colonnades, the rags of indigence blended with the ensigns of opulence; in a word, the most useless profusion in the midst of the most urgent wants.Jean-Baptiste Say

I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.

That's teenagers for you. Surely at some point, they've got to learn that ingesting random things isn't a great idea. Isn't that taught about the same time as potty training? Do we even potty train anymore? Questions like the OP make me think teenagers are taking their parents to college to wipe their bums for them.

They're not babies. If we remove everything they could possibly use improperly, they'll be left with...basically nothing.

Don't let little kids have it when they are so disposed to doing incredibly stupid things like superglue their friend's hand to his own pants.

Alcohol rubs don't work with C-diff.

That's a nasty little bugger of an infection all round. They're certainly better than nothing though, and they do assist in preventing the spread of many harmful bacteria.

No. We lived with a senile grandfather when I was a boy. The thought of being out of control of my faculties, even for a short while is terrifying to me.

I agree of course, but accidents happen. I've never been drunk -- but I have been on fire. I would never want to see that happen to a kid.

When you get right down to it too, I've got to wonder why children today are so susceptible to common germs, when farmer kids tend to be healthy and are exposed to, we assume, far greater concentrations.
