I've come to recognize that employers, especially large corporations, can be as oppressive in some ways as governments.

If they're all operating from the same playbook (see ICS 9001) changing employers may not improve the way you are treated much, if at all.

    Re: Drug Test

I'm against drug testing at jobs that aren't related to the public or civil services. As an employer I'd only be concerned with job performance and functionality. If the person works great as part of the team and gets their work done, then what they do in their off time is none of my business.

It's an invasion of personal privacy and should be illegal, just like it should be illegal for corporate powers to invade your personal finances to find out what your credit is like before hiring you. That is none of their damn businesses.

While I agree entirely with that, I didn't read the question as "should we require a drug test" but our opinions on whether or not there ought to be one. As such, assuming that all employers actively supported the idea and wanted it to happen, I could only vote 'yes'.

    Re: Drug Test

My work (truck driver, hauling heavy/oversized loads) requires random and pre-employment screening.

Yes I am sure it is a lot safer to be on the road now, as apposed to when I started prior to drug testing (NYC_LA) without sleep, not for the weak of heart.

Not all companies need people getting, what they perceive (heh, heh, some of the things that go on at truck stops would require another thread )their proper rest.

The company I work for gives two hours pay when you go take random drug testÖso when Iím a bit short, or I see a bill on the horizon, I come into the dispatch office wearing my NORML hat.

Is the financial information of a corporation no one's business either?

    Re: Drug Test

Of course not. I don't think employers should routinely test people, unless the job is of a nature where drug use could be dangerous. If they have a reasonable suspicion that a specific employee is using drugs, that's a different story. Test away. I know I would be very offended if an employer asked me to submit to a drug test as a condition for employment.

That's different. Corporations have shareholders that support the company. They want to know how their investment is maturing and what the executive board is doing to ensure long term financial success. As long as employees are functional and contributing, what they do in their off time is irrelevant.

Then as long as the corporation is functional and profitable, then what they spend their money on is irrelevant.
