It certainly CAN be racist. Anyone saying it absolutely can't be is insane. I just think its also wrong to say that it absolutely IS racist.

Context matters in that and there is no reason to see that and immedietely, instantly, assume the person is making a racist joke or trying to be racist or claiming that is what it is.

Perhaps in an absolute vaccum that assuption that could be assumed, but things don't exist in an absolute vacuum.

And I reject this notion that someone shouldn't post it or make such jokes out of this asinine feeling of Political Correctness so many people have.

I agree. On the other hand, I can understand why some blacks have a knee jerk reaction to be offended by such things. I don't agree with them, but I understand it.

Its like the Confederate flag. Its been used as a symbol of the south and state rights, but its also been used as a symbol of racial hatred. The Confederacy fought a war over the specific state right to keep and own slaves. To say "How can you be offended by this?" just strikes me as disengenous.

I don't agree with them taking automatic offense. I agree context is important, but I also understand that certain images have cultural baggage that we haven't quite managed to drop just yet.

And again, that said, I think we've come a long way on race and such caricatures no longer are exclusively racist.

Perhaps not exclusively. But i'd say it is used more for racial purposes than anything else.

And again, that said, I think we've come a long way on race and such caricatures no longer are exclusively racist.

And that was my entire point. As Zyph said, it is foolish to try to convince anyone that it can't be racist, but it is just as asinine to take the stance that it has to be racist.

Then explain how it was racist when it was used against Bush so many times...

so it wasn't when movies about assasinating bush came out, it wasn't when politicians on the left called troops nazis, murderers and war criminals, It wasn't when a hurricane was blamed on a president, it wasn't when protestors carried signs for troops to shoot thier officers.

nah, its now, that there is a "rise"

Precisely my point. Incivility has been part and parcel of American politics long before Obama entered office. It's hardly a recent phenomenon, as the OP would have you believe.

Lol, I'm pretty sure that was just a joke.

That was my take on the post though.......

Then explain how it was racist when it was used against Bush so many times...

I wouldn't, the same way i would not say it was racist the pic of Michelle previously shown.

The context is everything. I didn't see the use of the monkeys as 'racist' on either Bush or Michelle but i would say Blacks have been on the recieving end more than any other race when it comes to comparisons etc.

Go back to my first post in this thread. Or my second.

And actually, it is not a good example, as I am not claiming one side is better than the other, simply destroying the thread starters premise.

Like I said in another thread, the pendulum has simply swung the other way. It is in error that you call me out for something I did not do.

NEW YORK – Serena Williams isn't the only Grand Slam champion using profanity at the U.S. Open: Roger Federer let an expletive fly, too.

In an uncharacteristic display, Federer argued with chair umpire Jake Garner during a changeover in the U.S. Open final Monday. He said his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro, was given too much time to challenge a line call.

"I wasn't allowed to challenge after 2 seconds. The guy takes, like, 10," Federer said.

Then the 15-time major champion used a profanity in addressing Garner: "Don't tell me to be quiet, OK? When I want to talk, I talk. I don't give a ... what he said."

CBS microphones picked up the exchange during its live broadcast of the match.

Another example of incivility.

No, Madam, is not any worse than it was before. Bush was eviscerated most vociferously by the left. It seems you are suffering from selective amnesia. Allow me, a most consistent individual, to accurately gauge the political atmosphere for you.

And before him, Clinton was eviscerated just as badly by the right. It's the same old story, nothing has changed but the names.

Hell, just being a candidate it putting a target on your back. Look what they did to Palin and her whole family.

I notice a total failure to answer the question. That speaks volumes.
uh-huh. when blacks have been degraded as less than human for centuries, and compared to animals, i have to tell you why it's offensive and racist? please.

how disengenuous.

No, just honest. The point is that two pictures look alike. There are plenty of pictures comparing Bush to chimps, is that racist?

Or are you just ridiculously oversensitive?

Yes yes yes, we covered that. Now tell my why it's racist in this instance.

That's not a singularly black thing, much as race baiters and those who need race as a crutch in debate would like to annex it as their own. It was done to the Chinese, to the Irish, to Africans, to Europeans by other Europeans.

It's not a particularly black thing: its what humans do to each other...because monkeys are a step down on the ladder but not so absurd as calling another human a turtle or a goose.

I don't buy the whole poor, down trodden black experience of being called a monkey right before massa's whip came barreling down. That's over now.

Exactly. Which prompted my question: what's racist about it?

I notice she ran like hell from the question.
however, the no, i didn't. i'm working and didn't respond immediately. and are you denying the link i gave was racist?

The word is not oversensitive, but rather selective outrage. :2wave:

No more so than calling President Bush a chimp. Repeatedly.

because of the intent, jallman. calling michelle obama a gorilla is not funny. and if you're referring to the picture you posted, i consider it racist precisely because she's being compared to a chimp. when blacks have been called monkeys for centuries, it might wear a little thin.

Do you ever not race bait?

I didn't find anything racist about the Michelle pic, as i said before. The image got a smile from me. There was no racist intention behind that image

But what do i know about how black people feel o_O

Selective outrage is a beautiful thing.

bull****. when we've seen instance after instance of racist crap flung at obama, when do you NOT assume a questionable picture is racist? btw, i'm not outraged, but saddened. the right has plenty of legitimate ammo, and using race, as some republicans tend to do, diminishes any righteous arguments you might have.
