A HC thread has really turned into an illegal alien discussion so let's see what we think about that issue.

My thinking is with the length of our land borders (with Mexico & Canada) & all our beaches, if we took every member of ALL our military, police & Boy Scout troops & turned them into full-time border guards, we could never hope to even have a major effect on stopping illegal entry into this country.
(Other than having a "show of force" at the obvious entry points ......to help deter casual border crossers, any real attempts to seal any country's borders have always been doomed to failure & always will)

Even if we successfully catch a family of...let's say Mexicans....crossing illegally into this country, what do we do with them? (shoot them??) ..Of course not!...
OK...So let's incarcerate them!...But wait a minute....Now they are not only in our country but we have to feed, house & take care of their medical needs while in prison because they can't work!!...Nope...that won't work either.

The best we can do is send them home ...so that they can try again tomorrow...or next week, right?

No, it isn't. The only way for it to be possible would be for us to go into a self quarantine mode, with no travel into or out of the US, a wall around our whole country (including coastlines and Canada), and having our entire army patrolling this wall.

You can't seal nothing no more.

Don't believe it?

Ask the Chinese what they think about US debt and money printing.

No one wants to seal the borders, they want to control them.

Is it possible? Sure but to actually seal our borders would be one massive undertaking that we are never going to attempt.

Everything is possiblol.

Yes it is possible, but costly. We wiped out smallpox, sent men to the moon, won two world wars,so almost anything is possible. I would we just happy with a secured wall or even a secured fence on our northern and southern borders and have boats and panes that patrol 10-20 miles(or more) west or east out in the ocean depending on where our borders meet other countries, that would be way more effective than what we got now. Sure a few might sneak though, which is better than the hundreds or thousands that sneak through. If you have a leaky faucet you do not let it run at full blast just because you can not turn it off all the way, you shut it the best you can so that only a little bit of water comes out and then worry about getting it fixed once you are able to get it fixed.

Seal the borders?

...and just who exactly would pick our fruit then???

I love America, but I love my fresh squeezed orange juice just a little bit more.

If we tightened up our work requirements, making it much more likely that employers who hire illegals will do jail time and/or pay significant fines, the borders would be more easily controlled.

It would be a lot easier if the government of Mexico did more to provide a better business climate that creates jobs for its citizens. They don't need to do anything about the problem if their citizens can just leave if they don't like it. There's no reason why Mexico shouldn't be as rich as US and Canada.

If the Berlin wall didn't work what on earth makes you think a chain link fence extending a tiny portion of the border will?

So far, there are 4 people who claim it's possible to seal our borders but no one has explained HOW that could be accomplished???

Don't forget the poll question is "Is It Possible To Seal Our Borders?".......Not ..." If we spent every dime of tax money we take in, would it possible to stop a few more illegal border crossings?"
Jamesrage made a stab at it but his ideas would never work even if with the expenditure of more money than we could ever afford. Is there really any debate about that??

Even East Germany couldn't totally seal its borders. There's no way the U.S. can.

& look at the size of the borders of the old East Germany compared to the U.S.! The idea is really ludicrous.

When the Berlin wall was up I seriously doubt a **** of people crossed the border.5000 people successfully escaped to West Berlin during the whole entire time the wall was up, what is that was basically a 179 people a year between 1961-1990. So it is retarded to say the Berlin Wall didn't work. If only a 179 people came into the US illegally each year I do not think we would have the 12-20 million plus illegals in this country that we do now.

OK....Give it another shot then:
Please give us a realistic/affordable method for sealing all our borders???

Please be specific:
How many men will it take? (working in 8 hr shifts)
How much money will it cost?
How high do we build the fence?
How do we fence off the Atlantic & Pacific oceans?

They may have not completely sealed it but escapes where slowed down to a trickle. Most people who oppose illegal immigration would be happy with a trickle instead of a flood.

it's not about sealing the border totally it's about sealing it to the degree where INS can deal with the amount that do get through. If you decreased the amount of undocumented entries into the country by 70% the INS could deal with the rest.

Thats an all together different question ;)

I see no way to achieve that. But as I have always said I do not believe a wall or any attempt to "seal" our borders is the answer to our immigration problem.

Yes, and it was heavily manned, plus they shot on site. Much smaller border too.

OK...Same questions to you you then:
How do we decrease "the amount of undocumented entries into the country by 70% the INS could deal with the rest?"

You would be happy with a Berlin-style wall across the entire US-Mexico border? Wow, I really didn't think you'd take the bait but you did and you went way further than I could have imagined.

What, exactly, is wrong with such a thing?
