Should the POTUS *personally* preside over the UN Security Council?

I ask because it's never been done before.

VOA News - Obama to Preside at UN Security Council

From your source:

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice told reporters on Wednesday that the highlight of the U.S. presidency will be a summit-level Security Council meeting on nuclear non-proliferation. It is scheduled to be held on September 24 and will be chaired by President Obama - the first time a U.S. president has led a Security Council meeting.

...

In keeping with U.N. tradition, the U.S. president will address the General Assembly on the first day of its annual debate, on September 23. All in all, President Obama is expected to spend three days at the United Nations.

The first is a one day thing, and no big deal, the second is traditional. I don't see a problem, but don't know alot about how the UN works, so would be interested if some one had some contrary information.

I don't see why not. The United States doesn't get to be president of the Security Council very often. If Obama thinks that his presence there can do some good, it's OK with me.

then why do the US have ambassador t o UN?

He is not taking over the job of the Ambassador, he is presiding over 1 meeting.

To represent the United States. Obviously Obama is not going to meet with the Security Council every single day, so the US needs someone who is.
