Every word that does come out of Colbert's mouth means the opposite of what it sounds like. That's why it's great satire.

Like swift, he takes the oppositions side to the point of absurdity in order to make it the abject of scorn and ridicule. Even when I disagree with his real point, I must give him credit for the beauty of it.

    BAH! Didn't I say that that's why I can't stand him?

Regardless, it's a mindboggling way to get a point across, in my opinion. And to be honest, I like the traditional way of debate where we present facts in support of our stance, instead of proposing an insane idea merely to prove a point.
"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language...No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." - John Donne

It's never a moot point. When you read Swift, you need to look at the ideas he discards as nonsense, for there is where the meat of his debate is. He offers legitimate solutions and discards them as pure nonsense in order to make his point since the "source" is such a "fool", it makes these options all the more reasonable.

It's truly brilliant when done correctly.

It's not that I don't like Stewart, he's funny. Colbert is just funnier.

    Re: Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are both very funny, but it's silly to compare them. They are also very different.

For straight ahead humor, Colbert's deadpan style is hilarious. But Jon Stewart is a great interviewer - it's obvious that he's very politically knowledgeable off the cuff. Colbert's interviews seem more like routines.

    I love them both, though.
