    Conspiracy Theories

to indulge in a conspiracy theory is to believe that government is lying

let me give you some examples of conspiracy theories:

1 - Oswald didn't shoot JFK from 3 different directions

2 - Sun has an effect earth's temperature

    3 - Iraq has OIL

4 - Three skyscrapers is more than two planes

those are some of the good ones, now an example of a bad apple:

5 - Earth is ruled by an alien race of shape-shifting reptilians

so the question is - what percentage of the time are conspiracy theories closer to reality than the government's fairy tale ?

    i will be voting 80%

    public poll ...

    Re: Conspiracy Theories

Well, the definition of conspiracy is "a secret plot by two or more people", so actual conspiracies happpen every day.

Now these large conjectures of grand schemes by governments, secret societies, aliens etc; are a different breed that all have one thing in common; they tend to use as few facts as possible to support a large theory as possible. (the opposite of rational analysis and Occam's razor)

The theorists then usually try to put the burden of proof of the skeptics instead of supporting the theory with evidence. (then often claim the lack of evidence is also part of the conspiracy)

Also the number of people involved needs to be taken into account. While I serious question the total collapse of the three WTC buildings, I have to rule out a government conspiracy theory because of the large number of people that would have to be willing participants.

but this way of thinking introduces a way to conspire and get away with that.

    1) do a very complicated job which most complications included is not really necessary.

    2) destroy any evidence.

    3) invent a simple scenario which the conspiracy theory can get refuted with.

when someone successfully found out your conspiracy, but lacks evidence, give him a ROFL and call him a nut. be sure that others will do the refuting part and will also call the person a nut, until he really goes nuts.

I think you have some of these mixed up. Its Lee Harvey Oswald didn't shoot JFK, It was two planes didn't knock down two sky scrappers but the government using explosives and the Iraq war is for oil.

How is the sun affecting the earths temperature a conspiracy?
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Very true, but nonetheless the larger the conspiracy, the harder it is to pull off remains a constant.
