Ok lets say a guy runs for the presidency. His political beliefs are the exact same as yours, he was the governor of his state for 8 years in which the state prospered in. He is honest and trustworthy and basically great in every way.

However for a religion he is a scientologist, would you vote for him?

Yes no problem. I don't care what religion he is as long as he is good to the people and does what he says.

Hmm ... if he had my exact political beliefs, he'll also value secularism so sure.

That pretty much says it all. If his beliefs are the same as mine, then what do I care what his religion is?

It depends who he is running against.

I don't know about that, Scientology is probably one of the craziest cults I've heard of.

Being a member of it indicates, at least to me, that he is not very smart.

Any religion that is not of a particular persons religion is considered a cult and are considered "crazy" also.

A persons religion is no indicator if someone is smart or not.

Nope.

Read the history of Scientology for a deeper understanding of crazy.

It was created by a very questionable person about 60 years ago.

If the person was a scientologist it would not be possible for that person and I to have the same political beliefs. Scientology is a made up religion by an insane failed author who wanted to make money. Scientologists are some of the worst, craziest, loonies out there.

Since it would not be possible for this person to have similar political beliefs as I, under no circumstances would I vote for a scientologist

NO!

Let me re-assess my position.

OK....

NO ****ing way.

I think religious views should be taken into account as a broad array of factors when evaluating a candidate(but the religion should be analyzed as it is and not some false caricature). Scientology would be a big negative factor in my view but if they were as the OP suggests, I'd vote for them.

If the person understands completely seperation of church and state, then yes. If there is the slightest hint that the person doesn't understand that seperation, no vote.

John Travolta is a Scientologist and pilots his own 707 jet airliner. That takes some skill and brains.

Greta Van Susteren is also a believer and she's pretty brainy.

Please, enlighten me. What IS separation of church and state?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

It's pretty clear, seperation of church and state means Congress isn't allowed to recognize a religion as the official religion of the U.S. or prohibit people from practicing a religion.

Every religion is wacky, Scientology is just the "new" crazy. A hundred years ago, Mormonism was the strange new kid on the block, ad infinitum.

I can take any religion and point out the insane ideologies.

If your particular brand of insanity believes in earthly miracles and life after death, you too are as nutty as a scientologist or a muslim suicide bomber.

What's so nutty about thinking the human soul is of a dual nature, a body and a spirit, both made of matter that is eternal. A machine has an energy that makes it come to life, why is it so strange to think that life/intelligence is a type of energy that still exists after the eternal elements of the body return to dust.

If he's a scientologist then his political beliefs could not be the exact same as mine.

That doesn't motivate my vote in this poll either way though.

I find Scientology so distasteful that I would even vote for an atheist first.

Proof, for one.

The idea is at least as logical as your belief that the body is a machine with no energy source. Its outside of current ability to test(as far as I know) either way. There is spiritual evidence that I accept and you think doesn't exist,
