If the person was a scientologist it would not be possible for that person and I to have the same political beliefs. Scientology is a made up religion by an insane failed author who wanted to make money. Scientologists are some of the worst, craziest, loonies out there.

Since it would not be possible for this person to have similar political beliefs as I, under no circumstances would I vote for a scientologist

    NO!

    Let me re-assess my position.

I think religious views should be taken into account as a broad array of factors when evaluating a candidate(but the religion should be analyzed as it is and not some false caricature). Scientology would be a big negative factor in my view but if they were as the OP suggests, I'd vote for them.

If the person understands completely seperation of church and state, then yes. If there is the slightest hint that the person doesn't understand that seperation, no vote.

Please, enlighten me. What IS separation of church and state?

John Travolta is a Scientologist and pilots his own 707 jet airliner. That takes some skill and brains.

Greta Van Susteren is also a believer and she's pretty brainy.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

It's pretty clear, seperation of church and state means Congress isn't allowed to recognize a religion as the official religion of the U.S. or prohibit people from practicing a religion.
