We voted out affirmative action here in NE. It lifted the preferential treatment of people of color or gender in public contracting, public employment, and public education

I voted to ban it and I would do it again.

No pun intended, but I don't think you can make black and white statements about this issue. In some regions of the U.S., there is still a disadvantage for minorities and preferential treatment for whites. In other areas, it used to be an issue but isn't any longer. It should be up to each region to decide what is appropriate for its ethnic makeup. Some areas still definitely have ethnic tensions.

To say that race is a non-issue in America right now is too big of a generalization. The same goes for sexism, homophobia, and religious discrimination. We should never declare these battles "won" lest we let our guard down and the tensions grow even bigger.

Hey!! I'm just a white grumpy guy too!

I didn't really see an option to vote for that seemed to match what i think, so i didn't vote.

I think we haven't yet "done enough," and i think it'll be impossible to ever "do enough". Recent history is a powerful thing, and it's not possible to erase it with any actions at all. Certainly the gov't can do it. A lot of time needs to pass, and a lot of social changes need to happen for there to be the sense of equity that most folks (me included) seem to want.

Though i support Obama in a milquetoast sort of way, he DID get a lot more attention and support BECAUSE of his race. I doubt that he would have been elected without this special treatment that was a result of his "race". So yes, there's still way too much racism in the US.

America did a number on their slaves, and that's going to have its effects. (Of course, it's nothing like America did to the native indians, but nobody seems to care much about them).

Affirmative action IS racism, so that's not the answer or even an answer. The answer, as it almost always is, is education. (IMO)

I look forward to the day when we can get rid of AA.

We've came a long way in 50 years, but in many parts of the country we're not quite there yet.

I'll admit it was yet another reason I voted for Obama.
From now on, a poor black kid in Oakland or Detroit now know that they can truly grow up to be anything they want.

I'd have liked a choice that said, "yes, America is nearly equal but no socierty will ever be completely equal."

Society rewards blacks for entertaining the white folks.
Pro-sports figures, musicians, comedians, and actors are disproportionately black.
But stating that this means equality has been achieved is silly.
Imagine if a white man's best shot at achieving success lay in being, say... a rock star? Or a professional artist or novelist.
    These are extreme long-shots.
Blacks who lack the gift or the inclination to be performers need to have a full range of other avenues to success available to them, just as white folks do.
Psssst. A black man is president.

God bless the idea of having many different states with varying laws so that you may chose how to be reprimanded and for what.
