Is the law too soft on criminals?

I personally think that 25 to life, for murder is a light sentence. I will keep quite on what I think should really happen to the scum bags that decided to murder, just so I don't come off as "Barbaric." I just don't see how anybody still gets to live, after taking another human beings life.

Is your question specifically about murderers? The poll question says criminals, not murderers. Anyway...depending on the circumstances of the murder, a life sentence may or may not be appropriate. In most cases, they definitely do need to be removed from society for an extended period of time.

My biggest problem with our criminal justice system is not the AMOUNT of time people are sentenced to prison, but the CONDITIONS within prisons. Sexual slavery is commonplace, many people must either join prison gangs or die, and the guards do very little to protect prisoners from each other. If those problems were addressed, I would be more inclined to support lengthy prison sentences for a wider range of crimes.

Many people seem to forget that prison is supposed to be a punishment crminals,not a hospital for criminals,just like fines,parole, community service are punishments for various other crimes.

If your child had a TV,video games,computer,cellphone/telephone and other luxuries in his room would you send him to his room as punishment if he did something to require a punishment? Most people with at least an ounce of common sense would either say no or take all the cords out of the room before sending the child there as a punishment.Only a stupid parent would send his or her child to their room as punishment when they have all those luxuries in there. It seems that those same morons who would send their child to their room as punishment with all those luxuries do the same with scum going to prison.

The law is unbelieveably soft. Pedophiles released, murderers given life and released a few years. A reform of the entire justice system is needed.

I knew I missed something. I am talking about criminals just my emphasis is on murderers. Just me but, hypothetically (reason is I don't have a wife and kids) if I was working and came home to find my wife and kids were murdered. I just wouldn't feel justice has been served by giving him or her life.

It would really depend on the circumstances of each specific case I suppose.

And what you talk about isn't justice, it's revenge.

Depends on your POV. To you it's revenge. To the victim or victims family it is justice to give the murderer/rapist the DP.

I don't think it is. I would like to see public flogging reinstated though.

Depends, I guess. Keeping people of retirement age in jail for violent crimes they committed in their twenties is foolish, and drug crimes generally have too-long jail sentences, but early release is overused for dangerous convicts, at least where I live.

What we need to do is turn prisons back into workhouses. In California, for example, maybe criminals could replace illegal migrant workers?

Anything less than a Murderer stops breathing after taking a Life...Defeats the idea of Justice.

Anyone who thinks that federal and state laws are by and large "soft" on crime has never worked within the legal system.

I'm as much of a Law and Order Republican as you can get, and I still recognize that the vast majority of crimes are subject to absolutely absurd sentences.

It's always front page news when some convicted pedophile gets out after 5 years and rapes another kid, but you never hear about the 40 other guys who are serving 60 month sentences for this:
