Is the swear word filter really neccessary here?

Is the swear word filter really neccessary on this forum? If the majority of us are so for "free speech", why can we not use swear words in our post? Its not neccessarily for insults and hell, if it is, and mods have a problem with that, they can use the ordinary approach. I think considering this forum is full of adults (adults because we here are all mature enough and old enough to know what swearing is and use it - and debate politics), i dont see why it should be filtered out by the forum.

    Whats your thoughts guys?

I wish the filter was optional.

I agree. I'm not offended by words and those that are would be able to turn the filter on. Don't know that the site has that capability though.

I used to have a vBulletin forum like this one. Unless you can do some programming on the side which i am not too sure about, then as it stands it isnt possible.

I have no problem with the ****ing filter.

And I'm pretty sure everyone knows what those asterisks represent anyway.

I'm fine with the filter as it is. I feel it's necessary for folks who don't want to subjected to having to read through posts that sometimes consist of more swear words than relevant content.

I also have no problem with the swear filter. I gave it a little thought. You are allowed to swear if you need to and that comes up with asterics. It does however also remind you that you are swearing and so on a forum where thought might be appreciated and swearing frequently is done without thought can also be seen to ask for more thought.

I can even imagine pages and pages of swear words developing!!!

So yes we are adults but adults swear hopefully more than children so I have no problem with the filter.

I have no problem with swear words. I see no difference between using a swear word and regular words with the same context. For example if I call you **** for brains and someone else calls you dung for brains, shouldn't both be considered bad? If they mean the same thing then why should one be acceptable and not the other? Should someone who has been called a jerk feel less offended than someone who has been called a asshole?
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Most people say they have no problem with the filter, yet when, and easily the majority of people here, swear on this forum they make a point of using the underline or bold BB Code so it doesnt asterix out.

It doesn't bother me one way or another.
