No, it's not necessary.
There's no one in the forum that doesn't know what ****, ****, **** or the rest of the asterisks are.

With the sort of language I'd expect if the filter were off, I expect there would soon be little really interesting discussion around here for adults.

Rubbish, what difference would it make? People can get around it easier than they can write it on these forums anyway. Violation or not.

I say keep it. I'd rather not have people cussing all the time. **** is better than, well, I can't say obviously.

In that case they have to exercise a modicum of thought. This is excellent therapy.

Ummm....whats your problem? If your too up your own arse to join a simple harmless debate whereby i gather the opinions on the swearing filter on this forum which i happen to think is a slight annoyance, then leave the damn thread.

my problem is you don't seem to have enough sense to recognize that your opinion is just that.

You don't think this rule matters. Others disagree. If it's a problem, start your own board with your own rules.

Thats precisely the entire point of me setting up this poll. My opinion is nothing but my opinion and im sharing it to create debate. I then asked for others and debate what i disagree with. My intention isnt to change the rules or start a new thread with rules that i think is right. Im simply debating (debatepolitics.com - remember?) and apparently now i should set up my own board. Well, i dont like the way current English politics are, and i debate it on here. And what??

I'll give you a do-over....maybe you will make more sense this time

you - I just dont see the point in it if its so easy to get around.

me - people break every rule, and they are extremely easy to break...so why have any rules at all?

you - .............

Now you come back with a good reply

You just outlined a debate? I thought that was the whole point on this forum?

And besides, we have rules here about flaming for a reason, so any use in that context can be easily enforced without the filter, which makes the filter doubly useless.

:)

Ten characters.

It should be optional so those of us who do not have oh so delicate sensibilities can say what the **** we want to each other. I mean, jesus christ... your brain fills in the words blocked by the asterisk anyway, so how are these delicate sensitive people who are so 'offended' by swear words helped by the asterisks? If I say ****head, ALL of you know what's behind the asterisk. Your brain didn't read "asteriskhead", it read ****HEAD. So how is the supposed offense avoided? Because they don't actually see the letters S or H or I or T? ****ing silly, IMO.

I think that the filter should stay as is. For a variety of reasons.

One: it does make someone actually think of what they are saying instead of just saying whatever comes to mind. Intelligent thought is hard to come by these days.

Two: Some of us do have kid's that read the forums as these forums are excellent for widening a kids mind.

Three: No cuss word is necessary or wanted in a debate. There are plenty of other words out there that are not cuss words and work just as well if you MUST put some post/person down. For example here is a good way to put something down without once swearing...

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

Or you can just say "You little rapscallion!"...there's plenty of medievel word usages that can do the job for ya..and they're funner to use ta boot!

Necessity is subjective. I like keeping the swears for extenuating circumstances. Others are morel iberal about using them.

The word, regardless of swear or not, needs to fit and make sense. A lot of mideval terms - outside of a rennaisance fair or mideval LARP don't make a lot of sense these days in normal conversation.

I think that if the only way you can effectively communicate is by using vulgarities, you shouldn't be on this site. Vulgarities do not bother me because I am "sensitive", they bother me because they add nothing to the conversation other than rudeness, and often this leads to unnecessary flaming, personal attacks, etc.

the issue is I use this site at places that do content filtering.

If it was optional to where people could select to see the words, fine. I don't think people should expect the site owner to oblige their wishes, but they can certainly lobby for such an enhancement.

The only extenuating circumstances are when you stub your toe or hit your thumb with a hammer etc etc. Cuss words on a forum is not necessary because it is a forum. No one has to reply immediately. If you get to the point that you start using cuss words then just leave for a bit and cool down. Come back and try again.

I'm all for having to earn your swears, maybe for those with 1000+ posts only? Or you get a certain number per post/per day based on your user stats? Spammers and ne'er-do-wells become even more unpleasant without the filter, and though swearing certainly has its place in life and online I find rows of asterisks visually pleasing as well.

That is still opinion, a POV which I recognize though don't necessarily agree with completely.

Profanity isn't necessarily just a measure of anger. Topics on racial slurs, and profanity do occur - even unfrequently - in the state of NY I heard years ago about a plan to ban the word "Nigger" in schools. I had a teacher in 11th grade who went into the historic details and social atmosphere(s) surrounding the word, and the modern evolution. How could we teach others about it if we can't say it?

Of course, this example is different than a forum, but I think certain principals still apply.

I don't need to be the slightest bit angry to use cuss words. I use them as a matter of course in every day speech. I type on forums in much the same manner in which I speak, which is to say... frequently littered with swear words.
