Profanity doesn't bother me, but it seems to bother others, so I'm fine with the filter. I'm just glad we can circumvent it in the basement. That way, the pansies don't have to be offended.

The mods do not like us bypassing the curse filter.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Re: Is the swear word filter really neccessary here?

I'll give you the view on it I have...

First and foremost, we have numerous folks that read the forums while at a work place and a coworker possibly seeing something laden with **** and **** all throughout it can possibly get them in a bit of an issue. Its sort of the same thing with not allowing porn or other explicite pictures up on the forum.

Second, in general I believe that the censoring of the words decrease their use in debate. (its just not as fun when all you see is ****) So it kind of discourages gratuitous use of the words. While some are not really bothered by it, some find it brings down the level of maturity in a debate.

Third, unlike some of the other words that have been removed from the filter, in general these rarely come up as a center piece or correlary to a political discussion and/or are not considered light.

Overall, I'd not have a huge issue with the swear filter going away completely, but I don't have a huge issue with it in its currently stripped down version. My issue was much more from a year or so ago when there were a plethora of words that were banned, some of which were light and others inconsistant (some slurs blocked, others now) and people were routinely trying to bypass the censor even on words that weren't blocked by the censor.

Having just the three big ones now and all forms of those being blocked I think is a good compromise position personally.

^---- Actually this, anywhere besides the basement, is a violation of the rules.

My thoughts as to why people willfully bypass it in the basement is because:

    1. Its clearly stated you're goign there at your own risk.
    2. The crude, rude, comedic nature of the basement gives itself over to gratuitous cursing.

I'm glad there is a basement here. It's a great place for me to avoid, lol.

Re: Is the swear word filter really neccessary here?

I really don't see the point in having the word filter at all, and find it annoying when I write a post and have it posted just to see some words turn to asterisks. I use swears in casual discussion on a semi-regular basis, and it's annoying to have it made such a big deal about when it really isn't.

Then again I'm also against it for the very obvious reason that the entire concept of "bad words" is incredibly stupid and misleading as to what words actually are and what their purpose serves. For example, if I were to call someone a ****head it's not nearly as bad as saying that I hope that they get raped.

And besides, we have rules here about flaming for a reason, so any use in that context can be easily enforced without the filter, which makes the filter doubly useless.

I know it is. But lots of people do do it at some stage, im not going to lie and say i havent myself. I just dont see the point in it if its so easy to get around. May aswell lift the violation.

people break every rule, and they are extremely easy to break...so why have any rules at all?
