"Gold gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or someplace. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head."

I dont. I see it as more or less the way it is, until it collapses.

I think with the current technology it is possible for the populace to create and collaborates on policy and decisions directly on all levels of government. However I do not see that happening.I see the government slowly and incrementally trying to strip away constitutional rights while the public watches idiot reality and tv shows or get absorbed into sports or some other useless activity instead of paying attention to what the government is doing. Of course that is already happening.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"
