Is hate a Choice?

Is Hate a Choice?

For most of us hate is a choice.

Now, that said, what about psychopaths who have no conscience and are born not made?

They behave hatefully. Do they really have choice.

I think that is an entire thread of its own, somehow. I think some refer to it as the "bad seed". I'm not sure if they are born that way. I like to think that every person alive has a choice, no matter how slim, or unlikely... of redeeming themselves... in some way or another...

I believe this too, on the other hands, the odds aren't good.

However, one of my boys, who went to prison for several years for being an accessory to a double homicide...at the time he went, I thought he was damn lucky that he hadn't killed someone, himself, at that point. And, when I hooked up with him and bought dinner for him and his new wife in May, he told me that while it sucked going to prison for 7 years, it probably saved his life. He followed the advice I gave him before he went in: go to school, get an education, keep your head down, follow the rules, and survive. And, the fact that he did has meant that he's been successful at working since he got out. He still has some anger issues, but he's a good dad, and I think he's a good husband, too. He's changed his life, and truthfully, I think no one who knew him in those days would have believed it was possible for him to do so (except maybe me, I always liked him and thought he had a big heart).

But...I would say that he is the exception, not the rule.

I had you pegged for a qwert, myself.

I only say that because I am an intj, though.

I have to ask: What is a qwert?

We have an "IN" in common, I see. I used to be an INTP, but I saw the light to becoming an INFP. :)

Hate is human nature. I find new people to hate everyday.

Psychopaths are born that way. That doesn't mean they can't be objects of compassion.

Just don't hang out with them.

Like all products of ignorance, hate can be a choice or not depending upon the circumstances. Hate isn't useful. It's easy to see that people who harm others need to be incapacitated without hating them. Hating them simply risks irrational behavior on your own part or not acting pragmatically.

Here is one of those tests based on Myers Briggs:

Personality test based on Jung - Myers-Briggs typology

I am an INFP

Please come back and tell us what you are :)

INFJ, though the only strong one was N. I was almost neutral on F/T.

Einstein was E? That makes no sense, lol. I prefer small-group or one-on-one interaction. Their basis for being E seemed to have to do with liking to party, lol.

I got ISTJ, with the S being a 1, and the J being a 78. I and T were in the 50's.

I'm not sure they are born that way. I don't think it's conclusive that they are. People may be born in many different ways... and some are able to extract themselves from extraordinary circumstances / fates - and even from being born "bad seeds" - if that is even at all true.

When it comes to this area, I think there is still so much speculation as to whether people are born a certain way. It is too limiting, I think, to say that psychopaths are born that way.

Would be possibly better to suggest that some are possibly born that way, and that some others are not...

Nothing is definitive, not when it comes to the psyche, at least...

Dr Robert Hare, considered an expert, has studied psychopaths for 35 years and says their brains are wired differently and there is alot of evidence that they are born and not made.

I could put in some links if you'd like.

Psychopaths Among Us, by Robert Hercz

I think hate can be both a choice and in some ways taught. But I think with the type of hate you're talking about that it's mostly chosen. People can be brought up in a way as to encourage them to hate a race or a religion or whatever, but there's enough information out there for people to make educated choices. Those who don't simply are ignoring the data and making a decision by their own free will.

Some hate is good like:
Hating the St. Louis Cardinals
Hating the Greenbay Packers
Hating the Minnesota Vikings...get an out door stadium you Sallies!
Hating Payton Manning...you played ****ty in the Superbowl and the only reason your punk ass has a Superbowl ring is because Grossman lost that god damned game! And get off the damned TV!
Hating Eli Manning....damned punk, not even as good as his good for nothing brother.
Hating the NY Yankees....god baseball needs a cap
Hating the Chicago Whitesox....south side sucks!

Oops, faux pas. Einstein was an INTP. Quite right, you are!

The "NT" is relevant, though for the following:

All Rationals (NTs) share the following core characteristics:

•Rationals tend to be pragmatic, skeptical, self-contained, and focused on problem-solving and systems analysis.
•Rationals pride themselves on being ingenious, independent, and strong willed.
•Rationals make reasonable mates, individualizing parents, and strategic leaders.
•Rationals are even-tempered, they trust logic, yearn for achievement, seek knowledge, prize technology, and dream of understanding how the world works.

Here's another Gwendoline:
The Psychopath: The Mask of Sanity

My point is; does someone like a psychopath who has no capacity for empathy have choice when it comes to doing hateful things to others?

I think not. Psychopaths don't respond the same way others of us do to other people's suffering. They have to fake emotions.

Hate is a choice for most people. But some people also make themselves easy to hate. And I'm to happy to give them what they ask for.

Yes. If you are an adult and capable of free thought? Hate is a Choice.

Why would anybody chose it? The same reason someone would think it fun to set a human on fire, torture a baby, kill an animal, etc.

Some people choose it and say they enjoy it. I sure don't. If I feel anger and hate I want to stop it by any and all means possible. It's excrutiating.

Well, it does kill an afternoon.

Another Albert Einstein! :)

More like Marv Albert for me.

Hating the Chicago Whitesox Cubs....south side 100+ years of ineptitude sucks!

You almost got a thanks for that except ya had to go and add the Whitesox part.

I fixed it for you though. :2razz:

I don't think that hate is a choice, but choices you make (who you spend time with, what you read/watch etc) can influence the hate that you do or do not feel
